Swanson - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, December 7, 1956 Tallulah Boy Found Dead On Algiers Street Charles Swanson 21, Tallulah High School Graduate Found On Monday; Services Held Thursday Charles Swanson, 21-year-old Tallulah boy was found dead Monday afternoon about 3 p. m. in the streets of Algiers, a suburb of New Orleans, across the Mississippi River. Orleans Parish Coroner Nichols Chetta attributed the death of the Tallulah, Louisiana ship worker, who fell dead on the street, to acute pulmonary edema - strangulation from fluid on the lungs. In a Wednesday release an autopsy was performed in New Orleans Tuesday when Orleans Parish authorities suspected foul play in the death of young Swan son. No evidence of foul play was found in the autopsy Chetta said, but investigation will continue and a complete report would be released as soon as possible. Young Swanson lived in Algiers, a New Orleans suburb across the Mississippi River. He had just departed from the Algiers ferry, authorities said, when he was found dead a few blocks from his apartment, 209 Bellville Street. Swanson graduated from Tallulah High School and was drum major of the Tallulah High School Band. He attended Northeast Louisiana State College in Monroe. He accepted employment last year with Alcoa Steamship Company of New Orleans. Swanson was reported to have had a slight heart condition, but Dr. Chetta said no heart condition was brought to light in the autopsy. The coroner said Swanson's death was being investigated because "several stories were told and they were looking for a true story." New Orleans authorities said he had lacerations and bruises on his head and chest when found dead, but reported the injuries could have been received in his fall to the sidewalk. Funeral services were held here Thursday at 3 p .m. at the First Methodist Church with the Rev. W. F. Mayo officiating. Interment followed in the Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home. Swanson is survived by a brother, William W. Swanson of Corpus Christi, Texas; an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Smith of Tallulah, and a cousin, G. L. Smith, Jr., of Shreveport. Pallbearers were John L. Martin, Mac Thomas, Merle Gustafson, Bobby Grimes, Charles Edward Powell, Burney Rock Westmoreland, Cecil Forrest, Donald Walker, Lynn Naylor and James Vernon Tarver.
