Stone - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal December 1, 1930 On the afternoon of November 26 the mortal remains of John B. Stone were laid to rest in Silver Cross Cemetery near Tallulah of which town he had been a resident for many years. Mr. Stone was a resident of Madison Parish where he was born nearly seventy-nine years ago. Early in his professional career he had held the office of District Attorney for this Judicial District, and after the expiration of his official term continued the practice of law up to the time of his death. Mr. Stone was a wise counselor, an able advocate and a successful lawyer, ever serving the cause of his client to the best of his sterling ability. As a man, his character was marked by generous devotion to his family and unswerving loyalty to his friends, who were many. The funeral ceremonies were conducted by Reverends Dr. Colmery, of Edwards, Miss., Dr. Bell of Shreveport and Dr. Smith of Tallulah, ministers of the Presbyterian Church, of which denomination deceased was a member. Impressive Masonic Ceremonies were conducted at the grave in the prescence of mourning relatives and throngs of sorrowing friends. In life Mr. Stone had requested that "Nearer My God To Thee" be sung over his grave, and fulfilling this wise that beautiful hymn was sweetly rendered by the choir of the Tallulah Baptist Church. Deceased is survived by his widow Mrs. Virginia Stone and by one son, John B. Stone of Texas, and a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Willett of California. The active pallbearers were Messers; W. R. Gilfoil, J. N. Harvey, J. H. Gilfoil, Jr., William Gilpin, M. P. Erwin, Jr., James Acklen, H. Dundas and R. W. Gandy. The honorary pallbearers were: R. K. Boney, Jas. H. Gilfoil, Sr., W. M. Murphy, W. M. Robb, Dr. Geo. W. Gaines, L. M. Spencer, Henry C. Sevier, A. L. Sevier, J. M. Munholland, Judge F. X. Ransdell, Jeff Snyder, Chas. C. Aiken, M. P. Erwin, Sr., Senator Joseph E. Ransdell, Nick Kahn, Chas. S. Wyly and Robert Kennedy.
