Edward Cecil Smith - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal March 24, 1999 Col. Edward Cecil Smith, USAF, ret., will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on March 31, 1999. Dr. Smith, a native of Tallulah, was a decorated veteran of World War II and retired from the United States Air Force as a full colonel in 1968. During his military career, Dr. Smith was a member of the Strategic Air Command, posted in diverse areas of the world from Alaska to the Philippines. After his retirement, Col. Smith pursued advanced degrees in linguistics at Stanford University and the University of Kansas where he earned the Ph.D. degree. His distinguished teaching career led him to faculty positions at the University of Iowa, the University of West Virginia, and the Hampton Institute. Dr. and Mrs. Smith spent their retirement years active in the academic and musical life of the Hampton Bay, Virginia area. Dr. Smith was 86 years of age at the time of his death. Col. Smith is survived by his wife, Louise Thompson also of Tallulah: a niece, Patricia Quinlan of Houston, Texas: a nephew, Thurston Smith of Watertown. Mass., and a sister-in-law, Elaine Gust of Tallulah. Col. Smith was preceded in death by his brother, T.A. Smith. Jr., also of Tallulah.
