Smith - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal August 5, 1971 Tallulah man killed in Alabama crash A 49-year-old Tallulah truck driver was killed and a Waverly man was injured last Wednesday in a one-vehicle accident near Opelika, Ala. The Alabama Highway Patrol said C. H. Smith was dead on arrival at Lee County Hospital in Opelika and that Robert Stevens, about 50, of near Waverly, was hospitalized after the right front tire of the truck Smith was driving apparently blew out. The blowout caused the truck to crash into a ravine off Interstate 85 about three miles north of Opelika at 8:50 a. m. Authorities said Stevens was hospitalized with a broken leg and a fractured pelvis. He was reported in fair condition later that day. Both men were drivers for Delta Cattle Co. of Tallulah. Funeral services for Mr. Smith were held Saturday in the chapel of First National Funeral Home of Delhi with the Rev. D. E. Gentry officiating. Burial was in Providence Memorial Park Cemetery here. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Estelle, Smith of Tallulah; four sons, Thomas Smith, Charles Smith, James Smith, all of Tallulah; and Jimmy Smith, with the U. S. Army in Germany; three daughters, Gladys Smith, Thelma Smith and Cynthia Smith, all of Tallulah; his father, Minor Smith of Tallulah; a brother, Ira Smith, of Farmerville; two sisters; Mrs. Louise Erwin of Tallulah and Mrs. Fern Graham of Downsville; and one grandson. Pallbearers were Roy Wyatt, Donald Wyatt, Troy Wyatt, Deloy Wyatt, Eugene Ogden and Douglas Ogden.
