All rights reserved. ************************************************************************************************ Carl Smith - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, January 27, 1956 Local Barber Uses Shot Gun In Taking Life; Was Long Time Resident Here Open Bible Was Found By Side; "Dear All" Was Inscribed On A Sheet Of Paper Carl Smith a local barber for many years was found shot to death in his room at a local hotel by a maid at 2:30 p. m. Saturday. Dr. E. Otis Edgerton, Madison Parish Coroner, attributed death to self inflected wounds from a shot gun. Dr. Edgerton revealed that he took his own life near daybreak Saturday morning. According to Madison Parish Sheriff C. E. Hester, Smith's room was not locked, and he was fully dressed. Beside his body was a Bible, opened at the book of Psalms, Chapter 119. Inscribed on a sheet of paper was "Dear All." Carl had been a resident of Tallulah since 1927, moving here from Prairie, Miss. During that period, he had been employed by Abroms Department Store, Harry's Men Store, Fisher's Barber Shop, and once owned and operated his own barber shop. He was 46. His Wife, Mrs. Jessie Smith was at work at her brother's flower and gift shop when notified of his death, and while their only son, Carl, Jr., a high school student, was at home on North Mulberry Street. He was once a member of the Tallulah Lions Club, and a scout master of a Tallulah troop. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Irvin Cheney, officiating. Burial followed in the Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Crothers Funeral Home. Survivors other than his wife and son include his mother, Mrs. Francis Smith, Prairie, Miss; six brothers: Jasper Henry Smith, Marion, Arkansas; Eugene Smith, Yokena, Miss. ; Lawson Smith, Houston, Texas; Hindon Smith, Lefwitch Smith and Neal Smith, all of Prairie, Miss. Pallbearers were Joe Hamilton, Harvey Conn, Jim Cosse, George Spinks and Bill Oakes.
