Shields - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, June 9, 1967 Funeral Services Held Thursday In Lake Providence For Arnold T. Shields; Was Very Well Known Here Funeral services for Arnold T. Shields were conducted at 10:00 A. M. on Thursday, June 8, 1967, from Grace Episcopal Church, Lake Providence, Louisiana under the direction of Crothers Funeral Home, with the Rev. Keith Riggs and the Rev. Joseph C. Harrison officiating. Interment was held in the Lake Providence Cemetery. Mr. Shields died at 12:15 P. M. on June 7, 1967 after a brief illness. He was born in Bastrop, Louisiana on July 7, 1893, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Shields of Bastrop, Louisiana. From 1940 to 1962, Mr. Shields was member of the Fifth Louisiana Levee Board, serving as President of this Board from 1944 to 1962. He twice served as President of the Association of Levee Boards of Louisiana, and in addition served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Lower Mississippi Valley Flood Control Association. In 1963 Mr. Shields was honored by the Lower Mississippi Valley Flood Control Association when he was made an honorary lifetime member of this Association in recognition of his devoted service to the cause of flood control. Mr. Shields was elected to the Board of the Tallulah Production Credit Association January 7, 1946 and served as Vice-President of this Association until 196,. at which time he was elected President. Since 1946 he has served as a member of the Executive Committee. Also, Mr. Shields served as a Vice President of the Tallulah Finance Company. During World War I, he served in the United States Navy. Upon release from the Armed Forces, Mr. Shields went to Washington, D. C. as private secretary to Congressman B. G. Humphreys of Mississippi. In 1929 he purchased Ridgeland Plantation in East Carroll Parish where he operated his farming interests until ten years ago when he retired. Mr. Shields was a member of Grace Episcopal Church of Lake Providence before moving to Tallulah, Louisiana in March of this year at which time he transferred his membership to Trinity Episcopal Church in Tallulah. Mr. Shields is survived by his widow, Mrs. Josephine King Shields, an aunt, Mrs. L. E. Bentley of Bastrop, Louisiana, and several cousins, Mr. Llewelyn Bentley of Bastrop; Mrs. Agnes Shields Adams and Mrs. Carrol R. Regan of Tallulah; Mrs. John Weimar of Baton Rouge; Mrs. Warren Taylor of Monroe; and Mrs. Maude Leigh Taylor, Mrs. Dick Sadler, Mrs. Louise Prosser, Mrs. Dorothy Sims, all of Alexandria, Louisiana. Pall Bearers were C. B. DeMoss, Maurice Ursery, Ted Ivy, H. C. Sevier, Jr., A. L. Sevier, Jr., David Harvey and Carroll Regan. The family has requested that those wishing to send flowers instead make a contribution in memory of Mr. Shields to Grace Episcopal Church, Lake Providence, or Trinity Episcopal Church, Tallulah, Louisiana.
