Henry Sevier Sr., Dies, Services Are In Tallulah

TALLULAH -Funeral services for Henry C. Sevier Sr., 78, will be held in the Tallulah Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. today with Rev. Nat Heath and Rev. Lloyd O'Neal officiating. Burial will be in the Silver Cross Cemetery in Tallulah with Crothers Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Sevier was a native and lifelong resident of Madison Parish. He was a member of Tallulah Presbyterian Church, a member of the American Bar Association and member of the Louisiana State Bar Association where he received his fiftieth year membership in 1971.

He was a member of the Sixth District Bar Association.

He served for 16 years in the Louisiana Legislature, he was a former Louisiana Democratic National Committeeman during the first administration of Gov. Jimmy Davis, and was the former chairman of the Louisiana Democratic State Central Committee. In 1972, he received a fiftieth year award in the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Sevier was a veteran of World War I and a charter member of Scott-Nichols-Voak American Legion Post.

He is survived by his wife Mrs. Retta B. Sevier of Tallulah; one son, Henry C. Sevier Jr., of Tallulah; two daughters, Mrs. Rufus T. Yerger and Mrs. Robert W. Gandy, Jr., both of Tallulah; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Elmer Neil, Jr., Malcolm C. Sevier, Andrew L. Sevier Jr., Edward M. Yerger Jr., George Spencer, George S. Yerger III, Jack H. Folk, Jim S. Folk and Adrien Willett.

Honorary pallbearers will be all members of the Sixth Judicial District Bar Association.

Final rites held for Henry C. Sevier Sr.

Services were held in Tallulah for Henry C. Sevier Sr., 78, a Louisiana state representative and prominent local attorney. Mr. Sevier, senior member of the firm, Yerger and Sevier, died early at Mercy Hospital in Vicksburg after a long illness. Services were held at 3 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church of Tallulah with the Rev. Nat Heeth and the Rev. Lloyd O'Neal officiating. Burial was in Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Crothers Funeral Home.

A lifelong resident of Tallulah, Mr. Sevier was a World War I veteran, a member of the American and Louisiana bar associations, the Presbyterian Church, a former National Democratic Committeeman from Louisiana, and past chairman of the state Democratic Central Committee.

He was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives for 16 years, and was one of the original leaders in the fight to save Louisiana's tidelands. A Mason for 52 years, Mr. Sevier was also a member of the Sixth Judicial District Bar Association, and was a charter member of Scott-Nicols-Voak Post No. 100 of the American Legion.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Retta B. Sevier of Tallulah; a son, Henry C. Sevier Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn S. Yerger and Mrs. Robert W. Gandy Jr., all of Tallulah; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Andrew L. Sevier Jr., Malcolm C. Sevier, Elmer Neill Jr., Edward M. Yerger Jr., George Spencer, George S. Yerger HI, Jack H. Folk, Jim Folk and Adrian Willett.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Sixth Judicial District Bar Association.
