All rights reserved. ************************************************************************************************ Walter Marley Scott, Sr. Madison Parish, LA From Tallulah Madison Journal January 5, 1954 Walter Marley Scott, Sr., Leading Planter, Dies Local Agricultural Leader Passes Away, Leaving Behind A Record Of Untold Accomplishments Walter Marley Scott, Sr., son of one of the original pioneers in Madison Parish, passed away Sunday afternoon in the Vicksburg Hospital following a life-long illness. Mr. Scott, widely recognized as one of the leading planters in the South, had previously retired as President of the Tallulah State Bank after 20 years service. The sixty-year-old resident was the first man ever to successfully attempt mass soybean production in this area. After immediate progress in the soybean business, Mr. Scott switched almost entirely to the selected crop and was primarily responsible for the development of the Walnut Grove and Shirley Plantations. Walter Scott, Sr. was the husband of Mts. Matta Fuqua Scott, daughter of Henry L. Fuqua, former governor of Louisiana. The relatively mild mannered gentleman wooed and won his charming wife while she was employed as a teacher at a school in Madison Parish. Son of Mrs. Vineyard Kefauver Scott, formerly of Delhi, La., and cousin of the famed Senator Estes Kefauver, of Tennessee, Mr. Scott was a member of the Episcopal Church and Masonic Lodge. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at the family residence in Tallulah, with Rev. J. Daniel Gilliam, rector of the Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home. Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, Mrs. Matta Fuqua Scott; a son, Walter M. Scott, Jr.; his mother, Mrs. V. K. Scott; one sister, Mrs. John B. Patrick, and two grandchildren, all of Tallulah. Pallbearers for the funeral were E. C. Craig, Herbert B. Day, Carneal Goldman, G. A. Spencer, J. H. Bryant, Dr. H. S. Provine, C. C. Adams and M. A. Phillips.
