"Bill" Powell - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, July 27, 1978 Sunday morning accident fatal to area teenager A Tallulah youth died in a Vicksburg hospital after being injured in a single vehicle accident on old U S 65 S Sunday morning. Funeral services for William B. "Bill" Powell, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Powell of 1501 Louisiana Street, Tallulah, were held Tuesday afternoon. Powell was a lifelong resident of Tallulah He was a senior at Tallulah Academy, a member of the Tallulah Academy football team, a member of the school's T-Club, and a member of the Madison Parish 4-H Club. He was an avid hunter, and active in wildlife conservation. He died early Sunday night in Vicksburg Hospital after he was injured in an accident just within the city limits on old U.S. 65 S in front of the Tallulah Vo-Tech School. According to Tallulah police the accident was reported at 5:20 a.m. Sunday. Residents in a nearby house said the sound of the collision awoke them at 4:55 a.m. Police said Powell was traveling north on the highway at an estimated 70 mph when he apparently lost control or went to sleep. The pick-up truck Powell was driving left the east side of the road in front of the Tallulah Vo-Tech School, and traveled 500 feet before hitting a tree in the ditch in front of the old Oakwood Cemetery. Police said Powell apparently tried to brake and regain control of the vehicle after it had traveled some distance over the wet grass, but was unable to do so. The collision threw the youth from the truck and he came to rest in the center of the road 54 feet from the point of impact, police said. The Rev. Crawford Williams officiated at the funeral in the First Baptist Church in Tallulah. Burial was in Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Crothers Funeral Home of Tallulah. Other survivors include one brother, Ricky Powell of Tallulah; two sisters, Miss Ellen Powell and Miss Melissa Powell, both of Tallulah; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Roper of Tallulah; and two maternal great-grandmothers, Mrs. Pearl B. Hart of Vidalia and Mrs. Mattie B. Roper of Tallulah Pallbearers were David Weeks, J. C. Byram, Bob Laird, Jerry Smith, Donald Walker, Gerald Collins, Racer Holstead, and Jay Seale. The members of the Tallulah High School football team were Honorary Pallbearers.
