Phillips - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, March 3, 1983 M.A. Phillips dies, funeral is today Marion A. Phillips, former superintendent of Madison Parish schools, died Tuesday afternoon in St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe after a brief illness. He was 73. Funeral services for Mr. Phillips will be at 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church with the Revs. David Lawrence and Joel Treadwell officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe under the direction of Crothers Funeral Home. Mr. Phillips' career as a coach, teacher, principal and ultimately superintendent of schools spanned more than 30 years. Born July 10, 1909 in Waco, Texas, Mr. Phillips came to Tallulah in 1930, where he coached the Tallulah High Trojans for 11 years, never having a losing season. He also taught classes in science, history and math until he became principal in 1934. He left Tallulah in 1941 to return to his alma mater, Louisiana College, where he had an 18-month tenure as coach and dean of men. He then served in the U.S. Navy as a Lt. Commander from 1942-46 during World War II. He returned to Tallulah after the war, where he was supervisor of the Tallulah Trade School until he went to Peabody College in Memphis for graduate work in 1949. After receiving a master's degree, he returned to Tallulah High School in 1950 as a teacher and assistant superintendent. Upon the retirement of James R. Linton, Mr. Phillips was named superintendent in 1953, and served in that capacity until he retired in 1973. He was a rnernber of Scott-Nicols-Voak Post 100 of the American Legion, a former member of the Madison Parish Hospital Board past president of the Tallulah Country Club, member of the Retired Superintendent Association, the Louisiana Teaches Association and a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent of xxxxx.
