Palmer - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal October 31, 1952 Tallulah Loses One Of Best Citizens, Richard L. Keller Dr. A. T. Palmer Passes Away At Home Wednesday Alonzo T. Palmer, 58, well known physician of Madison Parish, died at his home early Wednesday morning, October 29. Dr. Palmer was a native of Missouri. He received his degree of Doctor of Medicine from Vanderbilt University and completed post graduate courses in surgery at Mayo's Clinic of Rochester, Minn., attended the United States Army Medical School at Langre, France and other general courses in military medicine. During World War I he a volunteered his services and served with the commission of First Lieutenant, Medical Corps, U. S. Army. Dr. Palmer entered practice in 1919, serving most of his medical years in Madison Parish. Due to bad health, he retired from h active practice in 1941. Dr. Palmer was a member of the staffs of the Vicksburg Sanitarium, the Vicksburg Hospital and the Vicksburg Infirmary. He served as President of the Madison Parish School Board for 16 years, was a member of the Board of Directors of the Tallulah State Bank & Trust Company, a steward of the Methodist Church for many years and was active in community affairs. Dr. Palmer was a member of the Tri-Parish Medical Society, the Fifth Louisiana District Medical Society, the Louisiana Medical Society and the American Medical Association, a member of Phi Beta Pi Medical Fraternity, the Beta Theta Pi Literary Fraternity, the American Legion and Masonic n Lodge. Dr. Palmer is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mattie Cummings Palmer ; two daughters, Mrs. A. H. Willett, Jr., Tallulah, and Mrs. Robert L. Mitchell of Shreveport: one son, Alonzo T. Palmer, Jr., Tallulah; two sisters, Mrs. June P. Wooten, Little Rock, Ark., and Mrs. Nathan Murphy, Clarendon, Ark., and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held t Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p. m. at the Methodist Church with Rev. R. Mack Bentley officiating Interment followed in the Silver Cross Cemetery. Active pallbearers were: Rufus Yerger, W. P. Sevier, Jr., Andrew L. Sevier, Jr., Cliff C. Adams, Francis Ward, Dr. George Webb, Henry C. Sevier, Jr., and Shields Bray. Honorary pallbearers were M. A. Wroten, Fred Peterkin, George Webb, Sr., Dr. E. Otis Edgerton, D. H. Allen, Frank Thomas, B. P. Folk, C. E. Hester, R. R. Spigener, J. W. Huckabay, Lester Saiewitz, P. W. Byrd, E. B. Schicker, R. C. Gaines, M. M. Bloom, Jas. R. Linton, E. E. Williamson, Henry C. Sevier, Sr., A. L. Sevier, Sr., W. M. Scott, Sr., H. B. Day and William F. Powell. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Crothers Funeral Home of Tallulah. Attending the funeral of Dr. Palmer from out-of-town were: Mr. and Mrs. Edward T. Broadnax, Miss Millicent Broadnax, Bastrop ; Mrs. June P. Wooten, Little Rock, Ark.; Mrs. and Mrs. James P. Bradford, Mr. J. M. Richardson of Alexandria, and Mr. and Mrs. K. L. Mitchell of Shreveport.
