Tallulah, Louisiana, lost one of its most revered and beloved citizens with the passing of Dr. Leonard Paul Neumann, Jr. on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. Dr. Neumann passed away at Baton Rouge General Hospital-Mid City in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was 76 years of age.

Dr. Neumann, known by all as “Pop”, was born in Tallulah February 16, 1944, to Idadelle and Leonard Neumann. During his lifetime, Pop distinguished himself as a renown athlete, a dedicated physician, and most importantly to him, a devoted husband and exceptional father and grandfather. Prior to his graduation in 1962 from Tallulah High School, Pop had amassed impressive awards in football among which was being named Outstanding Running Back in the state. He excelled also in baseball, basketball, and track. He was awarded a football scholarship to LSU where he was a four year letterman as a formidable defensive back and was voted permanent team captain by his fellow players. He was also awarded the All SEC Academic Award and was a letterman in baseball.

He graduated from LSU with a master’s degree in chemical engineering and then went to LSU Medical School in New Orleans where he earned his MD in 1973 while commissioned in the US Navy. He served his active duty in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Pensacola, Florida, where he enjoyed being the cardiologist for the Blue Angels and where he was board certified in Internal Medicine.

Pop was a loving husband to his wife, Emily of 49 years, who was his childhood sweetheart and his ideal partner in life. Pop and Emily married in 1966 and brought up three sons, Len, Ben, and Chris, to share their faith, values and love for family. Pop enjoyed the success his sons had in sports during their years at Tallulah Academy and he was always ready to point out that he considered his own glory years of Tallulah football being the time he spent as the team doctor for the Academy. Generations of players fondly recall Dr. Pop on the sidelines patching them up and inspiring them to play with heart. He was an unwavering LSU Tiger fan, and a die-hard Tallulah Trojan fan all his life.

There was, indeed, another dimension to the legend of Dr. Pop and that is the rare mix of compassion, dedication, and depth of knowledge that made him the consummate family physician. Virtually everyone in Tallulah has a story to relate about the vital part Dr. Pop played in their recovery or perhaps in the peace they had knowing he sincerely cared for them.

Following his service in the Navy, Pop and Emily came home to Tallulah where he opened his practice that was to be the cornerstone of medical care for over five decades. With his brother and fellow physician, Tommy, the two Neumanns provided a level of primary care that was on par with the nation’s foremost medical centers and rightly earned the gratitude and admiration of the entire community.

Pop is survived by his three sons and their families: Len and wife Heather and their childen, Heidi, Callie, and Will; Ben and his wife Lucy and their children, Max and Emmy; and Chris and his wife Lydie and their children, Amelia, John Christopher, and Neff; his brothers, Bobby, Danny, and Tommy, who Pop knows will carry on his love and spirit; and his sister, Betty Anne, who he considered his angel along with his sister Nancy, who preceded him in death. He leaves behind dearly loved spouses of his siblings and a host of nieces and nephews and close friend, Rita Hargrave, as well as other friends too numerous to count.

Services for Dr. Pop will be Saturday, January 2, 2021. A public viewing will be held at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home, 2 Crothers Drive, Tallulah, Louisiana, from 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M, followed by an open air graveside service at Silver Cross Cemetery, Highway 80, Tallulah, Louisiana, at 2:00 P.M. Pallbearers are his grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Episcopal Church in Tallulah, Tallulah Academy, or Epilepsy Alliance Louisiana.

The family would like to extend their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support which has been a source of comfort and strength for them.
