Nettles - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal September 8, 1993 Tallulah Man Dies in Early Morning Fire An early morning fire Tuesday claimed the death of a Tallulah man from smoke inhalation, officials said. Paul Nettles, 22, died when he tried to exit his home on 800 Arkansas St. before being overcome by smoke, according to Tallulah Fire Chief Fred Washington. A second man in an upstairs apartment, Paul Foster, escaped the fire uninjured, Washington said. The Tallulah Fire Department responded to the 2:40 a.m. call with two ire trucks and six firefighters, Washington said. The neighbors heard a popping noise about 2:25 a.m. but didn't know what it was until they saw the smoke," he said. The fire be was brought under control within minutes, Washington said. Nettles was discovered in his first-floor bedroom in the back part of the home, the fire chief said. "I believe he had tried to get out but was overcome by the smoke," Washington said. The fire appeared to have started in the front living room, he said. "There was extensive smoke damage," Washington said. Lloyd Perkins, the fire marshall supervisor for the area, said the fire "appears to be accidental in nature." Perkins also said it appeared that Nettles woke up and tried to escape the house but was overcome by the smoke. "It is really a tragic situation," he said. Washington urged area residents to call the fire department at 574-2061 at the first sign of a fire. Funeral services for Mr. Paul F. Nettles, 22, were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home with Father Silvin Waterkotte and Rev. John Rushing officiating. Burial was in Silver Cross Cemetery.
