All rights reserved. ************************************************************************************* Owen Moore - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Jackson Clarion Ledger, September 10, 2010 Owen Moore, of Yazoo City, Mississippi, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at his home. He was born on January 22, 1927 in El Dorado, Arkansas. During the difficult years of the Great Depression he helped to support his family by his work in the family garden and was an active Boy Scout, earning his Eagle Scout award. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on the destroyer escort USS Willis as a sonar specialist, attaining the rank of lieutenant. After returning to Arkansas , Owen attended college first at Magnolia A&M and then at Southwestern at Memphis , now known as Rhodes College. He completed his course of study there and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts with distinction in philosophy. He was called back into the Navy during the Korean conflict, and served in the South Pacific and in Japan. After completing his second tour of duty in the Navy, Owen was employed by Deltic Farm and Timber Company. For the next 16 years he worked as manager of three large plantations in the northeastern part of Louisiana. In 1953 he had the good fortune to meet and marry Cecelia Benjamin, of Tallulah, Louisiana, with whom he had four children. Over the years Owen managed large agricultural holdings in Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. He retired in 1997 but continued to be very active in the development and maintenance of his beloved home and property near Yazoo City, Mississippi. Owen lost his first wife, Cecelia, to cancer in 2002 and remarried in September, 2004 to Glendene Powledge, of El Dorado, Arkansas. They shared six wonderful years together. Owen is survived by his wife, Glendene; his children, Deborah Killmer, of St. Louis, Missouri, David Moore, of Dallas, Texas, Steven Moore, of Houston, Texas and Joseph Moore of Berwyn Heights, Maryland; their spouses; brothers, Malcolm Moore of Batesville, Arkansas and Donald Moore of Tyler, Texas; and 13 grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. Owen was gifted in working with people, solving problems and imagining new and better ways to get things done. He was an active and dedicated member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Yazoo City. He will be remembered as a good and kind man, a fine neighbor and friend, a devoted husband and father. He will be missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be at Trinity Episcopal Church in Yazoo City at 10 am on Saturday, September 11, 2010, followed by the funeral service at 11. A private family burial will follow the service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 323 N. Main Street, Yazoo City, Mississippi, 39194.
