Captain McCaffrey was left alone in New Orleans at a tender age without education, money or friends to battle for existence in a land of strangers. Nature had given him a strong intellect and indomitable willpower. With these as his capital, he acquired for himself learning, friends and fortune. The active years of his life were spent on the river; first on the Mississippi, in different positions, on steamers running out of St. Louis and afterward, on the Ohio, as pilot, master and owner, steadily advancing in position and fortune until about twenty years ago, when he retired from the river to enjoy the well earned fruits of his labors in less strenuous occupations. He moved to this parish in 1909, and purchased the beautiful Hermione Plantation, as a home for his declining years, and has since been one of our most successful planters. He leaves three sons, F. D. McCaffrey and M. S. McCaffrey, of this parish and Captain Jack McCaffrey of Chicago and many friends. Let us hope that "after life's fitful fever he rest well."
