Mary Evelyn Underwood Mayo

SHREVEPORT, LA- Mrs. Evelyn Underwood Mayo passed away on Monday, April 7, 2008 at her home in Shreveport, LA after a brief illness. Visitation will be held at Osborn Funeral Home Wednesday, April 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A private graveside service at Forest Park West will be held Thursday, April 10 in the morning. A memorial service and celebration of Evelyn Mayo's life is planned for 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Methodist Church, 500 Common Street at the head of Texas Avenue, Shreveport, LA. Officiating will be Dr. Pat Day and Rev. Wishy Nolan.

Evelyn Underwood Mayo was born July 6, 1919 in Watson, Louisiana, the fifth of nine children born to Laura Curtis and William Underwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Woodrow Underwood, Eloise Underwood Jones, Martha Underwood Robinson, Ray Underwood and Faye Underwood Gunter. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Rev. William Francis Mayo of Shreveport, LA, and daughters Frances Mayo Sistrunk of Salisbury, Maryland, Susan Mayo Cooper and Pat Cooper of New Orleans, LA and Carolyn Ann Mayo of Houston, Texas. Grandchildren include William Nathan and Linda Sistrunk of Belpre, Ohio, Jennifer Lynn Sistrunk of Fredricksburg, Virginia, Brooke Pickett and David Bruser of Toronto, Canada and Kelly Lane Pickett of New Orleans, La. Great-grandchildren include Cray, Danielle and Sara Sistrunk all of Belpre, Ohio. Surviving siblings include Hugh Page Underwood, Fulton Underwood, Malcolm Underwood, all living in the Watson and Baton Rouge area.

Evelyn was the valedictorian of her high school class at Live Oak High School in Watson. She attended classes at Southern Methodist University, Magnolia State University and Louisiana Tech University. She was a long distance operator and during the war she was a draftsperson for Gulf States Utilities before marrying a young Methodist seminary student in 1943. Over the years, she and her family lived in Dallas, TX, Baker, LA, Alexandria, LA, Tallulah, LA, Jennings, LA, New Orleans, LA, Springhill, LA and finally in retirement, Shreveport, LA. In addition to being the consummate minister's wife, she served in every capacity of church life, from bible school to United Methodist Women. Evelyn also taught school, developed remedial reading courses for high school students and was a secretary at Methodist Home Hospital. Evelyn was creative, excelling at painting, sewing and needle-work. She was an avid and colorful gardener.

The family requests memorials be made to the Eternal Flame at First Methodist Church in Shreveport. OSBORNFUNERALHOME.NET
