All rights reserved. ************************************************************************************************ Laura Gaines Leeves - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, June 23, 1967 Mrs. Laura Gaines Leeves Passes Away Friday Mrs. Laura Gaines Leeves, died last Friday evening, June 17, 1967 in Madison Parish Hospital. Mrs. Leeves had been ill for a long time and her health had steadily been failing the past year. She was born, 1892 in Rockwood, Tenn., third child of Dr. and Mrs. George W. Gaines. They moved to Millikin Bend, on the river just east of Tallulah when Mrs. Leeves was a baby, and when the town moved to Tallulah in 1905, the family and the beloved Dr. Gaines came with the others. She married Mr. Robert C. Leeves in 1911. Mr. Leeves died in 1965. They had two daughters, Dr. Attie Gaines Leeves, and Mrs. Claude Grimes, both of Tallulah; One grandson, Bill Grimes of Fort Worth, Texas. Miss Laura Gaines was known for her musicianship, and many olsters here remember the Tallulah Band, and her playing "Ragtime" with them, as they played for dances in this vicinity. Prior to her illness, she and Mr. Leeves made their home on Mountain Plantation, north of Tallulah. Funeral services were held, Sunday afternoon from First Baptist Church, Tallulah. Mrs. Leeves and her father, Dr. Gaines were charter members of the church organized and first built on North Cedar St., where the Southern National Bank stands now. Interment was in Silver Cross Cemetery, with the Rev. Clark Bell officiating. Pallbearers were: Judge C. C. Adams, Mr. J. K. Post, Jr., Mr. Edgar Lancaster, Jr., Mr. Herbert Massey, Mr. Rufus Yerger, Mr. Warren Patrick, Mr. Robert Graves and Mr. J. C. Sherwin. Honorary pallbearers were all physicians of Tallulah, Dr. Clark of Vicksburg, Miss. and Dr. Joseph Yerger, Tallulah, La. Mrs. Leeves was a member of the First Baptist Church, Tallulah; The Eastern Star, and a former member of the Tallulah Book Club, and the Music Department of the Club in which she was active.
