All rights reserved. ************************************************************************************************ Fay Shetter Kellar - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal December 17, 1970 Two parish residents killed in head-on Highway 80 crash Two prominent Madison Parish women were killed in a grinding, head-on collision of their car and a truck on U. S. Highway 80 just west of the Mississippi River Bridge Thursday afternoon. Mrs. R. P. Grimes Sr., 63, and her mother, Mrs. W. A. Kellar, 87, both of Mound, died in the accident. The driver of the truck, Alvin Cupit of Lake Providence, was unhurt. Mrs. Grimes' husband, R. P. Grimes Sr., was killed about a year ago when his combine was struck by a train at the Mound crossing. Sheriff R. R. Mitchell of Madison Parish said Mrs. Grimes and Mrs. Kellar, were returning from a shopping trip to Vicksburg, and were about a mile and a half west of the river bridge in front of the Webb home, when the accident occurred. He said Mrs. Grimes was driving and their car was in a line of west-bound traffic. Sheriff Mitchell said she apparently started to pull out of the line to pass and the two vehicles collided. Mrs. Kellar, was dead at the scene, Sheriff Mitchell said; Mrs. Grimes died at Vicksburg Hospital a short time later. Sheriff Mitchell was assisted in the investigation by Deputies John Cupit and D' Elmer Williamson and Louisiana Trooper Stanley Cox. Dr. George Webb, parish coroner, was also at the, scene. Mrs. Kellar, was formerly of Chattanooga, Tenn. Mrs. Grimes had lived at Mound since she was a child, and she and her family operated extensive farming interests, including one of the largest peach orchards in the area. They were members of the Tallulah Church of Christ. Services were at 10 a. m. Saturday at the Church of Christ in Tallulah, with Rudolph Hunt and Sellers Crain, former ministers, and Duane Hinsley, present minister officiating. Burial was in the Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of the Crothers Funeral home. Mrs. Kellar, who had lived in Mound for the past 58 years, is survived by one son, Claude Kellar, Ruston; one brother, John Shetter, Chattanooga; seven grandchildren, 17great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Grimes is survived by one son, Bobby Grimes of Tallulah; one brother, Claude Kellar,; and three grandchildren. Pallbearers were E. C. Woodyear, Ed Yerger, Jack Folk, Billy Grady, Burney Rock Westmoreland and Tommie Cleveland.
