L. Hampton Here Hampton Accused His Wife of Sitting On Lap of Honeycut Robert Honeycut, 40, was shot and almost instantly killed by M. L. Hampton, 40, shortly after 11 p. m. Monday night at the Hampton home where the Hamptons and Mrs. Allis Mae Carter and Honeycut all resided. Honeycut had not been in Tallulah but a few days and was living at the home of Mrs. Carter, his niece. It was stated by witnesses that Hampton had gone to Mississippi to work, and that he returned Monday night unexpectedly. As he came to the house Honeycut, Mrs. Hampton and Mrs. Carter were all sitting on a porch, and Hampton advanced toward his wife and said to her, "I have caught you," or words to that effect. Mrs. Hampton stated that he had not seen anything wrong, but Hampton insisted that he had, but said nothing to Honeycut. It is said that Honeycut had gone into his room, but when he overheard Hampton accuse his wife, he got up and came out to explain to Hampton that he was wrong. However, it was brought out that Hampton was infuriated and went into his room, secured a shotgun and shells and loaded the gun. Soon after Honeycut came out of the room he was shot. Witnesses said Honeycut said after being shot, "He shot me," and died in a few minutes. Officers were called and Hampton was arrested while he still held the gun. Mrs. Hampton stated that Hampton had not lived at home for about six weeks except last Saturday and Sunday nights. Hampton is being held in jail here on a charge of murder. Little information was available concerning Honeycut. He had been in Tallulah only a short time. His niece, Mrs. Carter, claimed that he was an ex-service man, but no information was available to substantiate this belief. Local officers have sent his finger prints to the Veterans' Administration in Washington to see if this can be verified. From The Tallulah Madison Journal (LA), June 22, 1938 ROBERT HONEYCUT FUNERAL SERVICES HELD HERE MONDAY Funeral services for Robert Honeycut were held here June 20 at Silver Cross Cemetery with the Rev. H. N. Alexander of the Tallulah Presbyterian Church officiating. Honeycut was shot and killed here on June 13 by M. L. Hampton, who was arrested and is being held in jail. Honeycut is survived by a son and several brothers and sisters. At the time of his death Honeycut was not well known here, having recently come to Tallulah. His finger prints were sent to the Veterans Bureau and his remains held several days for identification. Returns from the Veterans Administration showed that he was an honorably discharged veteran.
