Johnnie L. Higgins was born to Mary Mitchell and John Higgins on September 12, 1932 in Tallulah, Louisiana.

 

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952 and honorably served for 27 years, retiring at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Following active military duty, he continued to work as a civilian at the Jet Engine Test Facility at Kelly Air Force base in San Antonio until his final retirement in 1999.

 

Higgins is fondly remembered by numerous friends and coworkers. He died on January 15, 2011 at 78 years of age due to complications from stroke. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Cardell Mitchell. He is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Fanné Higgins; two sons, Commander Howard J. Higgins (Ret. US NAVY) and Dr. Darren E. Higgins; two granddaughters, Ella and Aria; stepmother, Martha Higgins; four sisters, Dorothy Adams (James), Addie Bowie (S.D.), Veronica Jarvis (Chris) and Sharon Brown (Monte); and brother David Larkin.

 

Visitation will be at Oak Hills Mortuary on Thursday, January 20, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at 12:00 p.m. at Oak Hills Mortuary on Friday, January 21, 2011. A procession will depart Oak Hills Mortuary at 1:00 p.m. Military honor services will be at 1:15 p.m. at the Lockehill Cemetery.
