John Rushing officiating. Private burial services were held at the Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Hester died Thursday at the Madison Parish Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was a native of Gueydan and was a retired school teacher and librarian. After earning a teaching certificate at Sophie Newcomb College, she taught home economics at what is now the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette. She taught in East Carroll Parish from 1921-41, home economics, then kindergarten and first grade. She was also librarian at Tallulah High School, and in the course of her time between Lake Providence and Tallulah, she returned to college to receive a B.A. degree from Louisiana Tech and her M.A. from LSU. Her other energies were channeled toward the insolvent of women in enlarging their horizons through community activity. Her Federation of Womens Club work, of which she was state president from 1937-40, was reflected here in the influence she exerted in the Tallulah Book Club and Delta Kappa Gamma, that fellowship of women educators who were distinctive in their service. She was founder of the chapter in this region. Survivors include her husband, former sheriff C. E. Hester of Tallulah; a daughter, Mrs. Mercedes Eichholz of Santa Ynez, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Mateu of Metairie and Mrs. Jeanne Gueydan of Denham Springs; 2 grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Madison Parish Library.
