Gilbert Madison Parish, LA From The Tallulah Madison Journal (LA), May 28, 1937 J. A. Gilbert Is Found Dead At His Home Here Jerome A. Gilbert, Tallulah postmaster, was found dead in a closet of his home here Wednesday afternoon with bullet holes in his head. A coroner's jury yesterday returned a verdict of suicide after an inquest had been held, but no motive was assigned for the tragedy. Gilbert's body, dressed only in under clothing, was found by his wife upon her return from a shopping trip to Vicksburg about 5:30. It was crumpled in a closet where Mrs. Gilbert kept her clothes. It was reported that it appeared that Gilbert placed the muzzle of a high power rifle in his mouth and pulled the trigger, as the top of his head was practically blown away. The rifle had been fired twice, as there were two bullet holes in the ceiling very close together, but there was no way of telling whether only one or both of the bullets took effect. Mr. Gilbert has been postmaster here for about five years and was formerly manager of the East Arkansas Lumber Company here. He came here from Lake Providence where he was at that time connected with the same concern. He was active in civic affairs and ws a member of the American Legion. The funeral will be held this afternoon in Texarkana, Ark., the home of his parents, at 2:30. He is survived by his wife, both parents and several brothers and sisters. .
