The shooting occurred at the Gilbert home on Bear Lake in the afternoon about four-thirty. Immediately after the shooting, young Gilbert requested a friend to stay with his mother and sisters, and then came to Tallulah and surrendered to Sheriff A. J. Sevier, declaring "1 had to do it." The sheriff said that domestic differences caused the shooting. According to persons living in the neighborhood, Gilbert had made threats of killing his whole family previous to the shooting. Dr. H. C. Sevier, Madison parish coroner, held inquest over the body Wednesday morning. It was impossible for the inquest to be held Tuesday night, as the roads to Bear Lake were impassable on account of recent rains, it being necessary to use a boat, or walk, to reach the scene of the killing. The elder Gilbert had been a resident of Madison parish about five years. Before coming to Tallulah he lived in Arkansas where he had relatives. He is survived by his widow and eight children. The funeral was held in Tallulah on Wednesday. (He is assumed to have been buried in Silver Cross Cemetery.)
