All rights reserved. ************************************************************************************************ Marlon Frey - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal, May 13, 1955 Marlon Frey Drowns In King's Lake Tuesday Afternoon While Seining Minnows, Was Farmer Attempt By Sister To Save His Life Was Unsuccessful, Drowns In 8 Feet Of Water Marlon Frey, age 21, who was a tenant farmer on the R. C xxxaffei's farm in Tensas Parish drowned Tuesday afternoon in King's Lake 15 miles south of Tallulah at approximately 1:30 P. M. Young Frey, alone with his sister, Sybil Frey, Dolly Johnson and Dorothy Stevens, were reportedly seining for minnows when he stepped into water over his head. He sank and drowned. According to reports, he told his sister and the other two girls to hold the minnow net close to the bank and he would swing around a length of the net and would swing the net to the bank, hoping to land more minnows in that fashion. It was in that manner, as he was walking with the net that he stepped off in a deep hole. His sister Sybil made an attempt save his life, but to no avail. It was reported that on another occasion, his sister had saved him from drowning. His father is reported to have said, that if his son knew how to swim, it was beyond his knowing. When the accident was reported a crew from the local fire department, Henry Roy, Benny xxxitt, J. E. Young, Bobby Bloom, came to the scene with the emergency truck. Two negros in a boat were given grappling hooks from the truck and in the place Frey was reported to have gone down, on the first drag by the negros, he was caught and brought to the bank of the lake. The scene of the accident was so close to the parish lines of Tensas and Madison that a measurement was taken to see which coroner to be called, according to reports the body was found about a foot inside the Madison Parish line. Dr. E. Otis Edgerton, parish was summoned. Edgerton, termed the death "accidental drowning." Manager W. D. Smith and Roland Mitchell of the sheriff's department investigated. Funeral services were held xxxday afternoon at the Little xxx Church at 3:00 P. M. Officiating were Rev. Arlin Bright, assisted by Rev. Clyde Turnage. Interment followed in the Silver Cross Cemetery with Young's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He is survived, by his parents Mr. and Mrs. William Frey, two brothers, Tolan H. Frey, with the Army in Ft. Still, Oklahoma and Doyle Frey of Tallulah; three sisters, Sybil, Norma Dell and Mrs. xxxx Ashley of Wisner. Pallbearers were Wilburn Collins, xxxx Harvey, Buddy Hopkins, xxxx Hopkins, Charlie Hopkins and Herman Ivy.
