Florence - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Monroe News-Star October 12, 1936 TALLULAH, La., Oct. 12 — (AP) — A hit-and-run driver stuck and killed Thomas A. Florence, 41, of El Dorado, Ark., three miles north of here, yesterday. Ernest Parker, Florence's brother-in-law who was with him, escaped injury. Florence is survived by his widow, two sons, a step-daughter and his parents. From Tallulah Madison Journal October 2, 1936 T. A. Florence Killed Here by Hit-and-Run Driver Apparently Drunk, Driver Has Not Yet Been Apprehended T. A. Florence, 40, of Eudora, Ark., was instantly killed about 12:30 o'clock Saturday morning about three miles north of here when he was run over by a hit-and-run automobile driver, his body being dragged about 40 yards. According to Ernest Parker, brother-in-law of Florence, the two were going to the home of Parker after a visit to the fair in Tallulah, and were walking on the left side of the highway. Parker says he was on the shoulder of the road and that Florence was on the concrete. There were several cars going north, the same way they were traveling, but none were coming in the opposite direction, and Parker stated that the driver of the car which killed Florence was apparently under the influence of liquor, as just before reaching them the car veered from the right side of the road over to the left side where they were walking. The car also struck Parker and knocked him senseless for a few minutes, and he claims when he had regained his senses the car had gone. Parker was bruised but not seriously hurt. Local officers were called and search was made, but no trace could be found of either the car or driver. Parker lives on the Ashly property, a part of which he has purchased, just across the railroad tract from Highway 65, north of here, and the accident happened about as they got in front of the Parker home about three miles north of town. Florence, with his family, were here to visit the fair, and was going to the Parker home to spend the night. Florence is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Florence residents of this parish, and who have lived in the Kings neighborhood for several years. At the time of his death he was a resident of Eudora, Ark. He is survived by his wife and sons Albert, Jr., and Charles, and a step-daughter, Margaret. He is also survived by several brothers and sisters. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon front the Baptist Church with Rev. Clarence Crow officiating. Interment was in the Silver Cross cemetery.
