All rights reserved. ************************************************************************************************ Lela Frances Edwards - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Vicksburg Evening Post June 12, 1951 RITES TODAY FOR YOUNG VICTIM OF DREAD DISEASE Polly Edwards Dies At Lake Providence Yesterday LAKE PROVIDENCE, La., June 12 - For six years, Polly Edwards ran a hopeless race without faltering. Yesterday she completed the last straightaway with honors sufficient to thrill the heart of any nineteen year old girl. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Melbourne Baptist Church in Transylvania for the young victim of leukemia. The Rev. O. O. Bryant will officiate and burial will be in the Silver Cross Cemetery. The Walters Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Six years ago a physician diagnosed the disease which was to bring death to "Polly," whose real name was Lela Frances Edwards. But until two weeks ago she lived her life to the fullest, crowding into her short span the highest honors that could come to a Lake Providence high school student. She was the Homecoming Maid in 1949; the delegate to Girls State in 1948; the DM Good Citizen in her senior year and alternate Miss East Carroll. She lettered three years in basketball and was president of the Lake Providence 4-H Club. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Edwards, and a sister, Edna Mae Edwards of Transylvania; four brothers, Robert of the army in Selma, Ala.; Charles of Anchorage, Alaska; Everett of Tallulah and James Edwards of Transylvania.
