Carpenter, III - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Tallulah Madison Journal November 13, 1996 Memorial services were held Tuesday, November 12, 1996 for Lieutenant General John W. Carpenter, III, USAF (Ret.), of San Antonio, Texas. Graveside service followed on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, with full military honors under the directions of Porter Loring Mortuary in San Antonio. General Carpenter died on November 8, 1996. He was 80. Gen. Carpenter was born in Starkville, Miss. He studied engineering at Oklaboma State and Mississippi State Universities before entering the U.S. Military Academy, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Military Science, in 1939. Gen. Carpenter also attended the Air Command and Staff School and the Air War College. After graduation from West Point, he attended the Air Corps Flying Schools at Tulsa, Ok. and Randolph and Kelly Fields, Texas, receiving his pilotwings in June, 1940. Gen. Carpenter's military decorations include the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster. In August, 1970, Gen. Carpenter retired from his position as Assistant Vice Chief of Staff, USAF, holding at that time additional duty as Senior Air force Member, Military Staff Committee, Military Academy (1970-74). Gen. and Mrs. Carpenter; the former Dorothy Bigelow Goding, have three children. The Carpenters currently resided in San Antonio at Air Force Village, Ill. Survivors include: wife, Dorothy G. Carpenter; son, John W. Carpenter, IV of Tallulah; daughters, Sue C. Rogers, Chesterfield, Va. and Jean C. Murray, Montgomery, Al.; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
