Baker Sr. died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 68. Mr. Baker was born in Tallulah. He had lived in Vicksburg since 1955. He retired as a captain from the Vicksburg Police Department in 1982 after 25 years of service. He was owner and operator of Baker Investigative and Security Service Inc. in Vicksburg and was a veteran of the Army. He attended Bowmar Baptist Church. Mr. Baker was a member of the Civitan Club of Vicksburg, Paxton Masonic Lodge and Mississippi Peace Officers Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Fannie Bell Baker; a son, Michael David Baker; two brothers, Leland Baker and Jim Johnson; and a sister, Allie Stout. He is survived by his fiance, Debbie Strange of Vicksburg; a son John E. Baker Jr. of Tallulah; two sisters, Carrie Mae Jones of Delhi and Grace Kinney of Baton Rouge; and two grandchildren, Ryan Baker and Tandon Baker, both of Tallulah. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bowmar Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry White, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tallulah. Visitation will be from 2 until 5 p.m. today at Glenwood Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be John Lee, Danny Butler, Clarence Whitaker, Doug Leo, DeWitt Gray, Robert Dowe, Jack Dowe and John Scroggins. Honorary pallbearers will be officers of the Vicksburg Police Department, W.B. Duggins Jr., Bob Hollingsworth, Jonathan Strange, Martin Pace, Joe Bell and Leroy Williams.
