SHREVEPORT, LA - Services celebrating the life of Robert Lee Ammons will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2010, in the Chapel of Osborn Funeral Home. Officiating will be Reverend Mark Sutton.

Bob was born on October 16, 1918 and passed away on February 15, 2010. Bob was very proud of his service with the 7th Army during WWII here and abroad. He was the Manager of the Central Storage and Moving on Southern Avenue for years. He was a member of the SAR, Shriner's and President of Shreveport Duplicate Bridge Assoc. and board member for many years.

Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Gwen Hand Ammons. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Vy Ammons; step-children, Jo Ann Stampley of Nashville, TN, Mike Word and wife, Nancy Nations of Springhill, LA, Marijan E. Word and fiancé, Bob Ayers of Covington, GA; sister, Betty Brown of Jackson, MS; nephews, Randall Hand, Casey Hand and wife, Vicki of Shreveport; and niece, Lanelle Thompson and husband, Larry of Dallas, TX.

Pallbearers will be Tony Stampley, Tim Stampley and Dr. Russell McInnis, Ed Chase, Ed Todd, Randall Hand, Casey Hand, Larry Tompkins, Pat Craig, Jerry Thomas and Rick Parker.

Services were held recently for Robert Lee Ammons Jr. Ammons, 91, died February 15 in Shreveport, his home for more than six decades.

Of six children born in Greenville, he was the sole remaining sibling of Betty Ammons Brown of Jackson. Their parents were Robert Lee and Alberta Sevier Nicols Ammons of Beulah. His childhood was spent in the Delta where he completed high school and was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, both in Rosedale.

During WWII he served in the 7^th Army as it advanced through North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Returning to Shreveport, he attended Centenary College and for many years was manager of Central Storage and Moving Company. He was a member of SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) and a Shriner. Up until his death he was active in the Shreveport Duplicate Bridge Association, having served as board member and president.

He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years. Gwendolyn Hand Ammons and is survived by his wife, Vy, and three stepchildren, along with nieces and nephews.

Interment was at Shreveport's Forest Park Cemetery following services at Osborn Chapel.

NOTE: Although Robert Lee grew up in the Mississippi Delta, he had strong Madison Parish connections since his mother and grandmother were from Tallulah, and his mother, father, brother and a sister are buried in Silver Cross Cemetery.
