All rights reserved. ************************************************ George Nicols Ammons - Madison Parish, Louisiana From Vicksburg Evening Post, June 21, 1949 RITES FOR YOUNG LAKE VICTIM ARE HELD AT TALLULAH George Nicols Ammons Lost Life In Bear Lake Tragedy TALLULAH, La., June 21-Funeral services were held this morning for George Nicols Ammons, 13, popular young son of Mrs. Alberta Ammons, who was drowned while swimming in Bear Lake, eight miles northwest of Tallulah. The Rev. John Kilpatrick, pastor of the Tallulah Methodist Church, officiated and interment was in the Silver Cross Cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the American Legion junior baseball team: Johnny Stocks, Clyde H. Clark, Jr., Wallace Hargon, Bill Christian, Johnny Hallbach and Phillip Crothers. The Crothers Funeral Home was in charge. The young victim, who would have been a high school freshman next year, reportedly became exhausted while swimming in the lake. His body was recovered quickly, but efforts to revive him failed. He is survived by his mother; one brother, Robert Lee Ammons. Jr., of Shreveport; four sisters, Mrs. Ophelia Friis and Mrs. Alberta Crosby of Natchez; Mrs. Sara Shelby of Boston and Miss Betty Jane Ammons of Natchez, and his grandmother, Mrs. Ophelia Nicols of Tallulah.
