Henry C. "Happy" Sevier, Senior, was born in Madison Parish on January 24, 1896, the son of James Douglas Sevier, a planter who came to Louisiana from Mississippi in 1880. He received his early education in Tallulah and took his Bachelor of Laws degree at Louisiana State University in 1917. Some time afterwards he joined the First Infantry Division of the Army with which he served in Europe in World War 1. During the fighting in France he was wounded sixteen times and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. He was discharged from the service in 1919 with the rank of Second Lieutenant.

After the War, Mr. Sevier took postgraduate work at Columbia University. He returned to Tallulah in 1921 and began his practice of law. He also entered politics and served sixteen years as a member of the Louisiana State Legislature. He is now a member of the National

Democratic Committee from Louisiana and Chairman of the State Democratic Central Committee. Mr. Sevier is also President of the Tallulah State Bank and Trust Company.

Mr. Sevier married Retta Brooks of Tallulah on April 20, 1918. They have two daughters, one son, and seven grandchildren. Their daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Sevier Yerger, has one boy and two girls; the other, Mrs. Robert Sevier Gandy, has two girls: and Henry C. Sevier, Junior, now a partner in his father's law firm, has two daughters.

Mr. Sevier is a member of the Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Rotary Club, a Mason, and a member of the Blue Lodge in Tallulah.

His hobby is hunting.

MADISON COORDINATOR'S NOTE: Henry Clay Sevier, Sr. died June 1, 1974. His wife Retta died August 15, 1992. Both are buried in Silver Cross Cemetery at Tallulah.
