BROKENBURN: The Journal of Kate Stone, 1861-68 
Edited by John Q. Andersen, Professor of English at Texas A & M

The diary of a young girl (Kate Stone) who lived on Brokenburn Plantation in Madison Parish during the Civil War. It tells of the hardships during this period. The Book-of-the-Month News described it when it was published as "A vivid and realistic picture of the Confederacy in its valor and agony, colorful as a novel but authentic history." 
The diary was found in the early 1950's in the possession of her daughter Miss Amy J. Holmes of Tallulah.  Explanatory notes are included, which primarily corrected and expanded on rumors prevalent at the time.

Printed in 1955 by the Louisiana State University Press. The price at the time of publication was  $4.95.

LOUISIANA SWAMP DOCTOR: The Life and Writings of Henry Clay Lewis

Henry Clay Lewis was a young doctor who lived in Madison Parish during the 1840's and wrote a series of humorous articles under the pseudonym of "Madison Tensas, M. D., the Louisiana Swamp Doctor." These articles appeared in the Spirit of the Times, a widely read New York weekly newspaper. They were collected and published anonymously in 1850 as Odd Leaves from the Life of a Louisiana Swamp Doctor. 
 
Louisiana Swamp Doctor was written in two parts; the first of which is the story of the life of Henry Clay Lewis and contains much Madison Parish history. The second part contains all of Lewis' known articles. The first part of the book was

Madison Parish – Earliest Landowners by Richard P. Sevier

A compilation of the earliest landowners (patentees) in Madison Parish. These are the first landowners who purchased land from the U.S. General Land Office after Louisiana became a state in 1803. Most purchases were in the middle 1800’s. Among other things the book includes 98 pages of patentee names including location and amount of acreage purchased, an index map and 58 pages of detailed township maps showing the exact location of the acreage, patentee names and year of purchase.

Grant's Canal-The Union's Attempt to Bypass Vicksburg by David F. Bastian

This is an excellent discussion of the three canals built in Madison Parish during the Civil War. Two of these were intended to change the course of the Mississippi River, and one (Duckport) was to be used as a supply route. They all were failures.
