The September 2006 meeting of the Lafayette Genealogical Society was held in the Meeting Room of the Main Branch of the Lafayette Public Library on September 21, 2006 at 6:30 P.M.  The meeting was called to order by President Jean Kiesel.  The Pledge of Allegiance was given and a moment of silence was observed.
Guests Glenn and Lori Gary have just located back to Louisiana and have begun researching Rivet, Gary, Richard, Sonnier, Hernandez.  Deborah and Charlene Roddy, a mother and daughter are researching their ancestors in the Houma area---Rachael, Louviere, Hebert, Olivier, Savoie.
Nominations are needed for the office of Vice-President for 2007.  Those nominated at present are:
          President     Charles Patterson
          Vice-President     vacant
          President-Elect     Earl Gates
          Secretary     Brenda Fuselier
          Treasurer     Warren LeBlanc
Everyone is asked to consider the office and offer suggestions for that office at the next meeting.
The December Society Banquet  is chaired by Daniel Besse.  It will be held at the Petroleum Club, Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at 6 P.M.  A member offered that since Daniel is now a Deacon he will be able to offer our invocation.
For a book that the Society donates to the library annually, Dottie Burleigh suggested a DAR 3 volume set that cost more that the $50.00 budgeted by the society. Warren reported that the society will not spend more than $50.00 per year for that donation, but if the library will wait another year we can offer it then from the 2006 and 2007 yearly budget.  This was approved by the general membership present.
First Saturday volunteer in the genealogy section of the Library will be Charles Patterson.
The Ancestral Footprints Conference sponsored by the Lafayette Genealogical Society will be held Saturday, October 21, 2006 at Grace Presbyterian Church beginning at 9 A.M.  Jean, Earl, and Charles have appeared on a morning television show on Channel 3 and Channel 5 promoting the conference.  Dottie Burleigh as conference Chairperson is asking for volunteers to provide 2 dozen cupcakes, to help stuff conference gift bags, to help set up on Friday, and to help staff the conference on Saturday.  Door prizes are being collected.  Warren reported that 24 registrations have been received for the conference.  Printing of the brochure was over the anticipated cost; Warren has requested an adjusted budget.  All members are encouraged to publicize the conference.  Everyones help is urgently needed that day.  JoAnn Pugh has created a press release.  Vendors are being arranged; the society will have a table with charts, printed older annuals, and CDs.  Door prizes are being accepted from the membership.  Martha reported that the bag lunches are arranged with Schlotzkys.  Drink and water donations from members are being accepted.
President Jean Kiesel gave a rundown of the speakers and subjects of their presentations.
Gift bags and name tags are being furnished by the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Bureau.  The bags will be stuffed at the October meeting.  All members were encouraged to help and participate with their presence.  The conference syllabus is running about 20 pages at present; it will probably end up being 24 to 28 pages.
It was announced that a Heritage Day will be held in St.Martinville on November 11, 2006 highlighting the ethnic groups that settled in the area.  The Lafayette Genealogical Society has been asked to participate; further information will be forthcoming at the October meeting.
Warren asked that members get their five pages of genealogic history ready for the annual publication; members should turn in this information by the October meeting.
Other projects of the society are ongoing.  Summer hot  weather was a deterrant for the cemetery projects, plus the planning of Ancestral Footprints, but will be continued after the conference.  The newspaper project of recording births, marriages, and deaths will be continued.
