The October 2008 meeting of the Lafayette Genealogical Society was held in the Meeting Room of the Main Branch of the Lafayette Public Library on October 16, 2008 at 6:30 P.M. President Earl Gates called the meeting to order. There was a moment of silence and the Pledge of Allegiance was given.

The minutes and treasurers report are posted on the internet at our web site.
President Earl Gates introduced Mr. Bud Lollar, the librarian who is the genealogy liason, and he spoke about resources, publications, and ordered books for the genealogy section of the library. Interlibrary loans may be available for in house use only, depending on where the loan is acquired from. Many genealogy books may be available from amazon.com.
It was announced that the Christmas Banquet will be held on December 4, 2008 at the Petroleum Club. Members and guests will gather at 6:00 P.M.; the cost will be $15.00 per person.
It was brought to the societys attention that since the library closes at 8:00 P.M. members may want to consider beginning the meetings at 6:00 P.M. rather than 6:30 P.M. since some members come directly from work and afterward, to give members time to talk genealogy. A discussion was held, a motion was made, and it passed.
Earl Gates gave a power point presentation, Let Us Help You Find Your Family History. Handouts were available. Members were reminded that U.S. Censuses are available at more than one site and may need to be checked out if there is difficulty in reading one particular census.
Charles Patterson spoke of his suddenly dead monitor and, after googleing, discovered that dust causes the computer fans to shut down. Compressed air was used and the problem was fixed.
He recommended that everyone do that periodically.
Encouraging society members to create a family web site, Earl Gates demonstrated his family web site.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
