A city of 4,500 inhabitants, located on the Southern Pacific Railroad, 144 miles west of New Orleans, in the cane, cotton and rice belt of Southwest Louisiana, and within five miles of the Anse La Butte proven oil field. It is the end of division of the Southern Pacific Railroad and the terminus of the Alexandria branch and growing city and an educational center.
