Sterling first of the week on business. Hon. A. H. Stamper is in Louisville this week on legal business. Master Tom Stamper, son of G. B. Stamper, is suffering with a fractured arm caused by a window falling on it. The grand jury at the last term at the court returned 68 indictments, mostly for selling whiskey and carrying weapons. Wm. Clark, Wm., Toliver and Jeff Toliver passed through town Monday on route to Louisville to look over their interests in the U. S. court. C. C. Hanks conveyed Jas. McQuinn to the Frankfort penitentiary last week under sentence of one year for stabbing and wounding Boone Tyrell. B. L. Nevill, our popular dentist, left Wednesday for Olive Hill and other points on the C & O and will remain away for several days, but will be here again in April. J. W. Haulsey, Jas. Drake, G. W. Haulsey and Ben. Sewell have returned from Frankfort where they had been as witnesses in behalf of the republicans in the pending contest, and report everything quiet and strictly democratic. The prisoners confined in jail have become quite a nuisance by jeering at every body that passes the streets. Saturday evening they made some jeering remarks at Charley Smith, who proceeded to pull his revolver and discharge four shots through the window, which created quite a stir among the prisoners, and since that time, the only noise you can hear in the vicinity of the jail is the faint murmur of the familiar hymn, "Our friends wait over the way".
