 On this 20th of October 1845 personally appeared before the undersigned Preston C. Berry a Justice of the Peace for Whitley County Kentucky Elizabeth Laughlin a resident of said county aged born 14th July 1762 who being first duly sworn an _____ by law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the provisionary made by the act of congress passed July 7th 1838 (and tho subsequent act for the like purpose) entitled an act granting half pay and pension to ______ widow that she is the widow of Thomas Laughlin deceased late of Whitley County Kentucky who was a revolutionary pensioner at the rate thirty six dollars and sixty six cents per year by application made in the Whitley County Court Kentucky as to his service in the army of the revolution.  She ___ to his original application not knowing personally anything herself.  She further declares that she was married to the said Thomas Laughlin her said husband on the ____ (day not given it is blank) day of ______ (Month not given it is blank) in the spring or summer in the year 1785 in the county of Washington State of Virginia that her said husband Thomas Laughlin departed this life in the county of Whitley state of Kentucky on the 29th day of May 1844 that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service that the marriage took place previous to the first of January 1794 but at the time above stated.  That since the death of her said husband she has not married and is now a widow.

On the 21st day of October 1833 personally appeared before the Whitley County Court Thomas Laughlin a resident of Whitley County aged seventy years being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the act of congress passed June 7th 1832.

 

            That he entered the service as a volunteer under the command of Lieut.? Samuel Warren? of Washington County Virginia and with his company was stationed at Moors Station on the waters of Clinch River in the year 1778 or 79 for one month and was discharged, he shortly after volunteered under Capt. Beaty of the same county commanded by Col. Arthur Campbell and marched against the Tories near the three forks of New River.  Was in actual service six weeks and was discharged.  He again volunteered in Sulivan County North Carolina (now Tennessee) under Ensign Henry King to guard the frontier at B?????? Station on Big Creek.  Continued in service one month and was discharged.  He again volunteered in the same county and _____ under Capt. John Pemberton commanded by Col. Isaac Shelby who joined the troops commanded by Col. Cleveland Col. Branscum? Col. Williams Col. Severe and marched to Kings Mountain under the commander in chief Col. William in this expedition he served two months and was discharged.  He again volunteered in the same county under Capt. ____ Cowin commanded by Col. Lowry? & joined Col.

Sever on Frenchbroad River from thence under Col. Arthur Campbell to the Cheroke Nation he served in this expedition two months and was discharged.  He again volunteered in the same county under Capt. Thomas Wallace and marched under Col. Isaac Shelby to the high hills of Santee and joined Genl Green from thence under the command of Col. Anthony Bledsoe  and Genl M???? in the swamps of Santee.  He served on this expedition three and a half months and was discharged about two weeks before the battle of the Utan (or Utah) Springs.  He served six times faithfully as before stated amounting in all to eleven months.  He has no discharge.  Nor no documentary evidence of his service nor dose (does) he know of any living testimony by which he could prove his service.       He hereby relinguish every claim whatever to a pension or an annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state.

Ans  In my fathers family bible now in possession?

Q 3rd  Where were you living when called into service where have you lived since the revolutionary war, and where do you now live

Ans  First in Washington County Va.

Then in Sullivan County North Carolina (____ Tennessee and now in Whitley County Kentucky the last thirty odd years where I now live.

Q 4th How were you called into service

Ans  I volunteered

Q 5th  state the names of some of the regular officers who were with the troops where you served.

Ans  Genl Martin? Col. Mahan Col. Henry? Those are all the ____ _____ I recollect of being with in the service, of the militia officers at the battle of Kings Mountain were Col. Campbell Col. Shelby Col. Cleveland Col. Severe Col. Bransum? Col. Williams & Genl McDowal?

Q 6th  State the circumstances of your service

Ans  I ___ volunteered under Lieut. Samuel ____ in Washington County Virginia and was stationed at Moors Station on Clinch River one month and was discharged in the year 1778 or 79.  2nd I volunteered and served under Capt. Beaty Commanded by Col. Arthur Campbell and marched against the Tories embodied near the Rivers Forks of Mud River Supposed for the purpose of taking the lead miners? but they dispersed before we got on      A tour of one and a half month and was discharged.  3rd  I volunteered in Sullivan County North Carolina (Sever? Tennessee) under Ensign Henry King to guard the frontier on Big Creek at M Brooms Station.  One month and was discharged.  I then volunteered in the same county under Capt. John Pemberton commanded by Col. Isaac Shelby and joined the troops under the command of Col. Cleveland Col. Williams Col. Severe Col. Branscum who was commanded by Col. William Campbell & marched to the battle of Kings Mountain but was not immediately in the battle having been

sent with the company after provision for the army, but got on in time to see the enemy stack those arms  in this expedition he served two months and was discharged.  I again volunteered in the same county under Capt. Calvin commanded by Col. Soony? joined Col. Severe on Frenchbroad River thence under Col. Anthony Campbell to the Cherokee Nation.  We burnt Chato Chelhowe Hiwasser and several other small Indian towns killed about 30 indians.  I took about the same number of prisoners. I served on this expedition two months and was discharged.  I then volunteered in the same county under Capt. Wallace commanded by Col. Isaac Shelby and marched to the high hills of Santee and joined Genl Green thence under Col. Bledsoe and joined Genl Martin (Note: may be Marian or Masian) in the swamps of Santee, I was engaged in many Scouts and the British troops lay at Monks Corner.  We took the Postisk? Pignet? guard then marched around the British army and took and burned one of there public stores near the 23 mile house? and took about 80 prisoners.  I served on this expedition three and half months and was discharged about two weeks before the battle of the Utaw Springs.    I was in the service agreeable to estimation eleven months as upwards

Wm Mays a clergyman residing in Whitley County Kentucky and Duncan McFarland residing in the same do certify that we are well acquainted with Thomas Laughlin who subscribed to the above declaration.  That we believe him to be about 69 or 70 years of age and that he is reported & believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and that we concur in that opinion.
