On the 21st day of October 1833 personally appeared before the Whitley County Court Charles Gatliff a resident of Whitley County in the state of Kentucky aged eighty five  years the 28th day of May last who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. 

 

That on the 2nd day of June 1778 he commenced As an Indian Spy under an appointment of John  ____ commander of Cooks first Batt????  county Virginia that he was in actual service under said appointment five months and thirteen days and tour of ten days with James Fitzpatrick  2 a??  tour of ten days with Joseph Ellis & William M????  3 A?? of four months and 23 days with Matthew C??? the ________ the 15th of November of the same year.  In June 1780 he was appointed an Indian spy by Col. Benjamin Logan on Clark’s expedition in which capacity he served three months.  He was appointed a spy by said Col. Logan to repair to Livinston? to ascertain as well the movement of the Indians as P?????? in which he served twenty days.  The two last from Kentucky making in all Nine Months and 23 he was in actual service as an Indian Spy.   P????? to the last two tours and in the year 1779 he served two campains as a volunteer private? command of Capt. Riddle in which campain they needed Riddles station.  He was in actual service one month.  In the spring of 1780 he volunteered under Capt. Haggan and served in the expedition commanded by Col. Roman? against the Shawnees an the little M????s one month making in all two months served? As a private. 

         In the summer or fall of 1780 he was elected Capt. of  Morlins? Station by its inhabitants and can ______ actual service three months and until the station was taken by the British & Indians.  In the fall of the same year and immediately after Morlins? Fort was taken as above  he received orders from Col. B???? to take command of Bryants Station which was likely to broke up.  He served under said appointment two months making in all five months of actual service as Capt.

            There is no living _______ that he knows of by which he can prove the foregoing declaration and the only document in his possession is _________ ________ dated August 22nd 1780.

The following questions were propounded by the court.

 

Question 1 Where and in what year were you born

Ans.     In the county of Philadelphia & state of Pennsylvania  and in the 1748 a????? to the ______ of my age.

 

Question 2  Whose were you living when called into service

Ans.  At Cooks fort? on Green base? formerly Batch??? county Virginia

 

Question 3  Where have you lived since the revolutionary war and where do you now live

Ans. Principally in Garrard County Kentucky except the last thirty? Odd years which is in Whitley County Kentucky on Cumberland river where I now live

 

Question 4  How were you called into service

Ans.    I was living in Cooks fort and was called into service by an appointment as an Indian Spy by Col. John Henderson? 

 

Question 5    State the names of some of the regular _____ with the troops

Ans.    There was none in Cooks Fort but in Kentucky and in the year 1779 Col. John Bowman, in 1780 Gen. Clark, and in 1781 Col. Benjamin Logan.

 

Question 6     State the circumstances of your service

Ans.     I was a spy in 1774 for Fowlers _____ Culbersons bottom on New River the length of service recollected.  In 1775 was peace.  1776-7 we had war with both British And Indians but I was not called on in either year.  In 1778 in the month of June I commissioned as an Indian spy the 1st tours with different mates I served upwards of five months.

I assisted in erecting Riddles Fort (NOTE from transcriber: this word is used throughout this pension and I don’t believe it is Fount but that is what it looked like to me, but I think it is actually Fort so this is what I used.) in Kentucky in 1779.  I volunteered in Capt. Haggans company and was an Bowmans campain had a battle at Chelerotha? with the Shawnees we got but one scalp but lasted 10 or 12 min.  After our return I engaged to hunt for game to supply Riddles Fort to prevent it braking up.  Doiches? was there hunter being killed and his mate refusing to _____  longer.   In hunting I frequently took with me Tho. Emery who was killed ____ at the fort. I continued until I concluded to build another fort called Soner? Mastians? Fort.  I hunted for Mastians fort sometime.  Isaac Peace my hunting mate being killed I took such others as I could get to serve.  When I was absent the fort was taken by the British and Indians and its inhabitants moved ______ amongst whom was my wife and four children.  I then _____ Col. Logan at Bryants Springs and was appointed a spy and ____ for the army which marched to Mud River at Pickeway had a battle and lossed 18 or 20 men.  On our return I received orders from Col. Boman to take possession and command of Bryants fort (or station) which I kept until some time in November.  I then took a tour as a spy to Livinston? to ascertain the movement of the _____ a tour of 20 days and after returning I resigned? all business of the kind and in the spring of 1781 I went in company with Daniel Boon & Benjamin Logan members elected to the Virginia Legislature to Virginia.  I volunteered (I think) in July of the same year,

in the fall following I stumbled through the wilderness to join the Southern army but hearing that C?? Wallace was taken at York I changed my course and went to Virginia G???????? County.  In 1783 I met my family below St???ton who had been taken prisoners from Mastions? Station in Ky and with them returned to Kentucky in the month of May.     Clarks expedition failing I removed at ease until in 1786.   I served in all the campains ever raised in Kentucky except Clarks in 1782 at the Blue Licks.   I was a spy and ______ (Note from transcriber: this could be private?) in 1786 under Logan in 1790 I was a spy and _____ (Note from transcriber: this could be private?) in Marmans? campain.  I headed the Pioneers about one and a half month and after my ______ at  ha???  I  g???? the service.   I was in four general engagements previous to the ______.   I served as a spy with 7 others by twos until all were discharged but myself.  The _______ tour eight months lacking 8 day but this tour service 1780.  The difference skirmishes I was in previous I cannot re????? But I know I served as I have stated first in my declaration         _______ as an Indian spy----nine months & 13 days as a private-----two months as Capt. -------five months.

Question 7th  Did you ever receive a discharge

Ans.   I never did nor did I ever apply for the nature of my service was different from most others as I always stood ready when called and

on and a discharge (if I ever thought of it) was a small consideration with me at that time.  Nor did I _______ any time that it would have been proper for me to apply except ____  ___   ____ when leaving Kentucky, but intending to return I never thought it necessary.  In fact I never thought anything about it con?????  I never applied.

We William Siler a clergyman residing in Whitley County and William Cummins residing in the same do hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Charles Gatliff who has subscribed and sworn to the foregoing declaration and interagation put by the court that we believe him to be upward of eighty years of age.  That he is reported and believed in the ___________ county & state in which he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and that we _______ in that ________.

On this 22nd day of March A.I.? 1853 personally appeared before me  M. _____ (Note from transcriber: Next line partially unreadable) ___________________________________ Rachel Gatliff a resident of the county of Whitley and state aforesaid, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress _____ February 4th 1853 that she is the widow of Charles Gatliff deceased who was a pensioner when he received his pension first she thinks it was after eighteen hundred.  She does not know the amount he drew.  She thinks he drew his pension in Lexington Kentucky the act under which he new she nose not now. 

               She further declares that she was married to the said Charles Gatliff at his house in Knox County Ky now Whitley County or the that her name before her marriage was Rachel Cummins and that her husband the aforesaid Charles Gatliff died at his house on the 30th of June 1838 and that she has remained a widow since that _____ or that she is now and was on the 4th of February 1853 a widow.  I also ____ of _____ C. _____

Note from Transcriber:  Charles Gatliff had to be married at least twice proof
given with this pension and the marriage of Rachel in 1809.

What ever happened to his first wife and four children

Is not mentioned here except to say that he found them again

in 1783 after they Were taken prisoner by the British and the Indians

 sometime my guess being about 1779 or 1780 and then he

returned them to Kentucky.
