Charles J. SHADE, 63, former Providence resident, died December 29 in his home in Mishawaka, Ind., where he had lived for the past 26 years. Survivors are the wife; a son, Max W. Shade, Mishawaka; one daughter, Mrs. Ronald CLAEYS, Spokane, Wash.; three grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Shade, Providence; and one sister, Mrs. Lillie EASLEY, Providence. Funeral services and burial were held in Mishawaka on January 2.

Clarence O. SHADE, 68, died at 7 a.m. Monday at his home in Wheatcroft after a long illness. Surviving are the wife, Agnes; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Jo McDANIELS of Wheaton, Md.; a son, Carl Wallace Shade of Los Angeles, Calif.; a grandson; and a sister, Mrs. Lillie EASLEY of Providence. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Union Church in Wheatcroft, with the Rev. James MAXFIELD officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bob WALLACE. Henry SHADE, 90, died at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday of last week in his home on Maple street. He was a retired farmer. Survivors are two sons, Ross, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Floyd, of Boonville, Ind.; a grandson, Jack Shade, Providence, whom he reared, and eight other grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Methodist church, with the Rev. Ed OAKLEY and the Rev. S.R. GILLIAM officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Ridge cemetery.

Mrs. Mattie H. SHADE, 86, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday in her home on Maple street. Mrs. Shade was married several years ago to Henry Shade following the death of her husband, John HANKINS. Survivors are the husband; two daughters, Mrs. M.G. GATES, New York, N.Y., and Mrs. Julia MERKLE, Longview, Wash.; one son, Tom HANKINS, Manila, P.I., several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the home, with the Rev. Edd OAKLEY officiating. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. cemetery, Madisonville

Mrs. Julia SHEEKS, 74, formerly of Crittenden County and well known in Providence where she had a number of relatives, died Saturday in her home in Hutchinson, Kan. Survivors are a son, John Sheeks, St. Louis, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. J.B. ALLEN, Providence, Mrs. Mendozen HUFFMAN, Nashville, Tenn., and Mrs. Mary PERRY, Marion; two brothers, W.A. DEBOE, Providence and Hugh Deboe, Cotton Plant, Ark. A funeral service was held Tuesday in Hutchinson, after which the body was brought to Marion, where a service was set for 2 o'clock this afternoon, with burial to follow in Maple View cemetery, Marion.

Mrs. Belle SHEFFER, 60, died last Thursday morning in her home near
Sebree. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Gene KEITEL, Oakland, Calif.;
a granddaughter, Patricia Gene Keitel; two stepsons, Rufus and Hillery
Sheffer, Henderson county; four sisters, Mrs. M.O. SHELTON, Mrs. Grant
Shelton, and Mrs. Jess STINNETT, of Sebree, and Mrs. Velmer SHELTON,
Henderson; and two brothers, Dock and Lee BURTON, Sebree. Funeral
services were held Sunday in Mt. Lebanon church with the Rev. Nealey
PEARCEY of Dixon officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Lebanon church

Funeral services for Mrs. Della SHELTON, 66, wife of S.E. Shelton, who
died at her home five miles south of Sebree Tuesday night, were held
at the Mt. Lebanon General Baptist church at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
The Rev. Nealie PEARCY and the Rev. E. Y. LASLIE were in charge.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Oval JONES; a
brother, T.F. MARKS of Lisman; and a sister, Mrs. T.M. ADAMS of

Thursday, January 1, 1942.Compiler's note: Uriah "Ury" Della Marks, born 21 September, 1875, Webster County, was the daughter of Thomas M. Marks and Margara Jane HIGGINSON. She married Starling E. Shelton, 29 May, 1895, Webster County. Starling Shelton was the son of E.D. Shelton (1851-1930) and Queen CROWLEY (1854-1923); he died 27 January 1969 and is also buried at Mt. Lebanon Church Cemetery. Della and Starling Shelton were the parents of three children: Thomas D. Shelton (1896-1934) who married Vernie BRIDWELL; Leola Shelton (1903-1966) who married Oval "Toad" JONES; and Lloyd B. Shelton (1906-1936) who married Coryne Myers. All three children are also buried at Mt. Lebanon Church Cemetery. A photo of Della Marks and her father Thomas Marks is available in the Webster County Family Album.
James SHELTON, 66, near Clay, died at 9:15 p.m. Sunday in Cardwell's Clinic in Providence of injuries received late Friday afternoon. According to reports, Mr. Shelton and Fred GIBSON had unloaded gob from their wagons into a mudhole near their homes. Mr. Gibson's team, left standing, ran away, striking Mr. Shelton's wagon. He was thrown out and two wheels of each wagon ran over him. He suffered broken ribs and internal injuries. Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Ollie Carrier Shelton; one son, Noble Shelton, Detroit; one daughter, Mrs. Bryan MILLER, near Nebo; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Shelton, of Louisville, and M.F. Shelton, of Henderson; and one sister, Mrs. Ada JACKSON, Henderson. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the General Baptist church (unreadable) pastor, the Rev. C.H. HOWARD, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ray WIGGINTON, of Fredonia. Burial was in I.O.O.F. cemetery in Clay.

After more than five and a half years the body of the first Providence service man killed in action in World War II has been returned here for funeral and burial rites. Pvt. Leighton F. SHELTON's body arrived here Tuesday morning and was taken to the home of his mother, Mrs. S.R. COLE, on Maple street. "Junior", who was 20 years old, was killed in action in North Africa on Nov. 10, 1942. When his mother received news of his death early in the following month the entire community was grieved to learn of its first war casualty which was to be followed by many more. He was honored at a memorial program given in Providence High School on the first anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, Dec. 7, 1942, and resolutions in memory of the city's first to die in action were adopted by the Providence Kiwanis Club at its next meeting. Pvt. Shelton was born Feb. 4, 1922. His father, Leighton F. Shelton, sr., died while he was an infant. He dropped out of high school at mid-term in his senior year and volunteered for service with the army in January 1940. He was home on furlough at Christmas time 1941 and was sent overseas the following May. After spending several months in England he was in landing operations in North Africa on Nov. 7. Surviving are the mother, Mrs. S.R. Cole and stepfather, Mr. Cole, Providence; sister, Mrs. Ed EDWARDS, Los Angeles, Calif.; and a brother, Leo, Providence. He was a member of Victory Baptist church where funeral services were held at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, with the Rev. W.T. ANDERSON officiating, assisted by the Rev. Albert KEMP. Burial was in Lakeview cemetery. Clarence McCoy Post 110, American Legion, was in charge of military rites. Business firms were closed during the service.

Mrs. Mary E. SHELTON, 84, died Wednesday morning of last week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John W. HANOR in Morganfield. Her home was near Clay. Survivors besides Mrs. Hanor are another daughter, Mrs. Stanley JOHNSON of Henderson; a son, Labe Shelton, Morganfield rural route, teacher in Dixon school; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Walnut Grove Church, with the Rev. A.C. DYSON of Evansville officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Martha Allen SHELTON, 69, former resident of the Tilden section
of Webster county, died Sunday morning at her home in Henderson
following a year's illness. Survivors are the husband, a daughter,
Blanche, and four brothers, Steve, J.W., Finas, and Riley SUTTON, all
of Henderson. Funeral services were held at the Audubon Baptist
church in Henderson at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Herbert SCHMITZ

Mrs. Mayme Lee SHELTON, 48, died suddenly of a heart attack at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at her home in Clay. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Alma BROWN of Henderson, Mrs. H.T. CROWELL and Miss Elizabeth Shelton of Clay; two sons, Jones Ed Shelton of Henderson and Allen Shelton of Clay; her mother, Mrs. John JONES of Clay; one sister, Mrs. Glendola RAMSEY of Dawson Springs; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Clay General Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. R.T. MITCHELL of Providence officiating, assisted by the pastor, the Rev. D.A. DUFFER. Burial was in I.O.O.F. cemetery, Clay.

Mount Lebanon, Ky. - Tula C. SHELTON, 93, died at 4:20 a.m. Saturday at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. She was a lifelong resident of Webster County and member of Mount Lebanon General Baptist Church. She was a retired homemaker. Surviving are a sister, Zultra Shelton of Mount Lebanon; and a sister-in-law who cared for her, Mary Ruth Shelton of Mount Lebanon. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Lebanon General Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the family residence in Mount Lebanon near Dixon. Tompkins Funeral Home Sebree-Poole Chapel is in charge of arrangements. From unknown newspaper and undated. Mrs. Willie Susan SHELTON, 88, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Lonnie GIBSON, near Dixon. Surviving besides Mrs. Gibson are two other daughters, Mrs. Duvall Gibson of Henderson, and Mrs. Rex MYERS of Sebree; two sons, Delmer Shelton of Henderson, and Adra Shelton of Poole; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Shelton family cemetery, with the Rev. W.W. OAKLEY officiating, and burial was there.

Guy Junior SHIELDS, 21, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday at the home of his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Shields in Wheatcroft. He had been an
invalid since nine years of age, and had been bedfast for the past
three years. Survivors besides the parents are one brother, Johnnie
Shields of Dekoven; and ten sisters, Mrs. Flora PHILLIPS, Providence,
Mrs. Marie MABRY and Miss Pearlie Shields, Morganfield, Mrs. Edna
COWAN of Clay, Mrs. Dona LITTLEPAGE and Mrs. Willie Shields of
Evansville, Mrs. Ernestine BRANTLEY, Misses Mary L. MARVARINE, and
Emma Lee Shields of Wheatcroft. Funeral services were to be held at 3
o'clock this afternoon in the Union church in Wheatcroft, with burial

John F. SHIELDS, 86, a former resident, died Sunday at his home in Detroit, Mich., where he had lived for several years. He was a member of Seven Gums Baptist church in Union county. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Kerney GIBSON, Detroit; three sons, Ernest of Earlington, Harris of Bridgeport, Ohio, and N.W. of Detroit; 28 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren. Eddie Shields of Providence is a grandson. The body was taken Tuesday morning from Melton Funeral Home to the home of a granddaughter, Mrs. James BEAN, near Sullivan. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Baptist Church at Pride, with the Rev. R.H. WALLACE of Wheatcroft officiating. Burial was in I.O.O.F. cemetery, Pride.

Mrs. Nona SHIELDS, 76, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday at her home near Clay. Survivors are the husband, Herbert; three sons, Hammack and Lovell of Clay, and Charles Shields, Louisville; a brother, Robert HAMMACK, Clay; a half-brother, James I. Hammack, Dixon, two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the General Baptist church in Clay, with the Rev. D.A. DUFFER officiating. Burial was in I.O.O.F. cemetery, Clay.

Jerry SHOFNER, 64, died Tuesday night at 11 o'clock at his home here. He had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Tuesday morning. Mr. Shofner had been an employee of the L&N Railroad Company for 35 years and had lived in Clay, Dixon, and Sebree before moving to Providence. He is survived by his wife, Luella; two brothers, John Shofner of Grove Center and David Shofner of East St. Louis, Ill., several nieces and nephews. The body is at the Franklin and Edwards Funeral Home in Clay. Funeral arrangements have not been made. Burial wil be in Fernwood cemetery at Henderson.

Charles ("Poss") SHOULDERS, 56, Route 1, Madisonville, formerly of Clay, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Hopkins County Hospital shortly after suffering a heart attack. Surviving are the wife, Vera, a sister, Mrs. Floyd SHADE of Boonville, Ind.; and three brothers, Luke, Tom, and W.F. Shoulders, all of Clay. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Clay General Baptist Church, with the Rev. E.G. SISK officiating. Burial was in I.O.O.F. cemetery, Clay.

Forrest SHOULDERS, 82, near Clay, died at 4 a.m. Monday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Cora WATERS, near Dixon, following a few days' illness. Survivors are the wife, Mrs. Cora Shoulders, near Clay; two sons, Ira, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Stonewall Shoulders, Dixon; two daughters, Mrs. Waters, near Dixon, and Mrs. Verdie CLARK of St. Louis, Mo.; and several grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Free Union General Baptist church, with the Rev. W.M. FRISBY of Providence officiating. Burial was in I.O.O.F. cemetery in Clay. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Marshall Shoulders of Clay; Mrs. Ode FORD and Mrs. Ira Shoulders, Indianapolis IN, and Mrs. Mabel CURRY, near Clay; three sons, George, of Clay; Ott and Bud, near Clay; 31 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the General Baptist Church in Clay with the Rev. W. W. OAKLEY of Poole officiating. Burial was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Clay.
