Dr. Pylap MEDEKLE, believed to be one of the finest herb doctors in the Wayne, McCreary, & Pulaski Co. area.  Read about him in the obit below.  Dr. Medekle married Louvernia COOPER about 1896.  Born near Coopersville, KY in 1877, she was the daughter of Edward Wilse COOPER and Elizabeth SHEPHERD.


OBIT - DR P Medekle, widely known Indian DR dies of heart failure in office in Dunn Bldg, So Corbin Oct 28

DR P. Medekle, Indian doctor died suddenly Friday evening about 7:15 O'clock in his office in the Alex Dunn Bldg in South Corbin. The doctor had been in failing health for several years, suffering from angina pectoris of the heart, but had been feeling good for several days. He was dead when medical aid arrived.   The body was moved to Gibson & McGinnis funeral directors and prepared for burial.

A memorial service was held at the South Corbin Baptist church Sunday afternoon, where a large number of friends gathered to pay last respects to the Dr. Several friends paid tribute by telling wonderful blessing he had been to them and all suffering humanity. The body was taken to his home in Pine Knott for burial, funeral services were at the latter place Tuesday, Oct 1st.

Pylap Medekle was born in the swamps of Florida, March 23, 1847. He was the son of one of the old medicine man of the Seminole tribe in Florida. His father was a full blooded Seminole and his mother of French descent. He studied medicine under his father who enjoyed the highest rank of an Indian Medicine man and has since a boy devoted his entire life as an herb doctor using nothing but pure crude herbs in his practice and helping thousands of suffering humanity over practically all the United States.   For several years he did a traveling practice, oft times riding horseback many miles to see sick patients. He was located in Somerset, KY for several years and was owner of widely known and famous institution known as The Indian Sick Home where hundreds of patients from practically every state in the Union were successfully treated. His hospital burned a few years ago and he moved to Oliver Springs Tenn. Thence he went to Graysville Tenn where he rented the Advent Sanitorium at that place for two years. As his health was failing, he returned home in Tennessee. In early spring of 1927 he came to the city   and at first located in the Rayburn and Jenkins Bldg on Main St, later moving to the Dunn Bldg in South Corbin renting practically the whole building and furnishing it for the purpose of treating patients. He has successfully had his practice at this place until the time of his death.

The doctor leaves a wife and two sons, Dr. A.L. Medekle of Cynthiana, Ky and Dr. O. Medekle of Oliver Springs, Tenn, also a daughter Mrs Hugh B Cross of Oliver Springs. Three children are deceased. He was married to Miss Verna Cooper of Monticello Ky about 1896.
