There was a school I went to in Allais (Walkers Branch) Perry county, in the l950's. My teacher was named Lillian Vitatoe. It was a one room school. It was through the third grade. When we got into the fourth grade we went to Walkertown. My little school in Allais has so many good memories. We had a coal stove in the middle of the room. Two outside toliets. A bucket of water at the front door which all of us drunk from the same little dipper (aluminum cup) Wonder why we didn't all stay sick? We had goverment cheese, crackers and powdered milk that we got each day I guess as a snack. I remember when we would clean out our desk, it would be cramed in the back, full of these snacks because I got so tired of eating them.(wish I had some now) ha. We had three classes in the little room. The older children would help the younger ones. We had chores to do like clean the black boards and erasier, sweep the floors, front porch and we would get to ring the little bell when recess was over. We played hard outside at recess. We got so hot and dirty because we had no grass, concreat or nice play grounds, but we had the best times playing with each other We did have a swing set. We played alot of ball and tag. The boys played marbels and sometimes the girls would play with them.
