For more information about the database you may call (270) 298-7452 or (270) 274-4202. In 1973 the Ohio County Historical Society purchased the historic John C. Thomas home that was built in 1880. The home was turned into a museum, but not until 1991 did the museum take off and exhibits poured in from county residents. Today, inside the museum there are many exhibits of life in the 1800's and the early 1900's. There is the doctor's room with medical tools from last century; memorabilia relating to World War I and II complete with manniquins wearing uniforms; the Congressional Medal of Honor awarded to Wesley Phelps, the only Ohio Countian to receive this medal; and of course a tribute to Bluegrass Music with a manniquin wearing an outfit worn by Charlie Monroe, brother to Bill Monroe. In a Victorian bedroom there is the genealogy library room with a computer donated by Thomas Ashby. Mr. Ashby monitors and maintains the database (Personal Ancestrial File)that he updates frequently. Currently there are over 9,000 Ohio County families in the database. To find out more about the computer and the database, call (270) 298-7452 or (270) 274-4202. Outside the museum there are several other things to see! The completely furnished 1838 Log Cabin (which is a museum within itself with several historic items); and there is Cliffie Autry's little country store that is loaded with early day kitchen essentials, home medical remedies, scales and an old cash register. The county's second oldest one-room school house, in Goshen, was torn down and rebuilt on a smaller scale due to deteriotion is close to the Rustic Relics Building that houses many old homemaker tools and machinery, viz leather horse, still, loom, cider mill, and many other things. And you can't miss going into the L & N caboose to see the railroad relics and the many other early railroad paraphernalia. To make a donation or to contact the Historical Society and/or the Museum
