Licking Valley Courier Introduction

INTRODUCTION

BY CONNIE SPURLOCK

The Licking Valley Courier began in the year 1910 but the first official year which was microfilmed was in 1911. In the 1980`s a fire broke out in the offices of the Licking Valley Courier which destroyed many of the hand-written letters and notes that were written to the newspaper, one of those being an original obituary on my maternal great-great-grandmother, Clarinda Hill Williams Patrick. Knowing that much of this wonderful information was gone prompted me to check the rest of the Licking Valley Courier on microfilm to see what condition they were in.To my surprise the newspaper showed evidence of burnt edges from the fire and with the microfilm slowly aging with each year that passes I decided to try and save some of the historical and genealogical information, if at all possible.

The names under each article are pseudonyms with which to protect those who were writing these articles. Some of the names used were SLAB, COW BOY, FAIR PLAY and PIGHEAD. These folks are to be recognized for their diligence and hard work at bringing forth the local news which was very important to those living in the area. If their indenties can be identified then please e-mail me at [email protected] to give them proper credit.

The Licking Valley Courier has been the local newspaper from Morgan County since 1910 and has been a staple in my family`s lives for the past 4 generations , if not longer. It is with the greatest respect and honor that I will try to transcribe these to the best of my ability.
