The National Archives in Washington, D.C. has military records for the Revolutionary War, Mexican War, War of 1812, and the Civil War. You can visit there to obtain records or you can request the records by mail. You must send a specific form (NATF Form 80) requesting the information. They have available Pension Records, Military Records, and Bounty Warrants. You may obtain the request form at many libraries, by mail from the National Archives, or request the form by e-mail. The following link will take you to their website. Keep in mind when requesting records that you do not have to send any money with your request. They will do their search for free. If they find someone fitting the description you give on the form, they will inform you what the cost of coping those records will be and you can then request the copies and send payment or decline the offer. You are not guaranteed that the person's records you order will be the same person you are seeking. The more information you can provide them for their search, the better your chances are for a perfect match. Be sure to read the form carefully and follow the instructions.

Visit the National Archives and Records Administration - Regional Records Services to print or request NARA Standard Form 180 to request military records. These records pertain mainly to military service since during World War I and later.

Contact the KY Department for Libraries and Archives and request a records order form for military records filed with the state for Kentuckians who fought for the Confederacy. Explore their website for information on other records they have available and how to obtain copies.

Please read in total the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affair's policy for providing military grave markers before requesting any markers.
"Do not complete this
application if the veteran's grave is already marked with a private monument
even though the veteran's military data is not shown. Applicant must
certify the grave is unmarked and a Government headstone or marker is
preferred to a privately purchased headstone or marker. This
restriction applies to companion markers. Companion
markers identify two or more descendents buried, or to be buried, in the
same or adjoining graves. A grave is considered marked if a monument
displays the descendant's name and dates of birth and/or death, even though
the veteran's military data is not shown. Applicant may be anyone
having knowledge of the deceased. Headstones or markers furnished
remain the property of the United States Government and may not be used for
any purpose other than to honor the memory of the decedent for whom the
headstone or marker is issued. A Government provided headstone or
marker may not be used as a footstone or to
supplement a private monument, or be affixed to an existing inscribed
monument. I certify the headstone or marker will be installed on
the veteran's unmarked grave at no expense to the government and all
statements made are true and correct to the best of my
knowledge." - Application for standard Government Headstone or
Marker 40-1330 Veterans' Affairs.
Please consider the above before signing any forms allowing a tombstone
to be ordered in your name. There has been recent abuses of this policy
which resulted in more than one marker being placed on graves and even the
wrong military information being supplied.

I post all the information I find on the Internet to the website. It would be very unusual for me to have anything not-yet-posted. I periodically search for any and all links for particular topics of interest to the site and gather new links. I encourage all of my visitors to report their favorite links back to me for posting so others can find them and enjoy them also. The website functions as a 'reference' book for information found on the Internet.
I have found this site to be very helpful in locating the history of particular troops. The Civil War Archives
