Terango, Dr. Larry


Dr. Larry Terango, 77, died Friday, May 16, 2003 at St. Joseph Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Stella ”Sally” Terango, and their two daughters; Eileen Rebecca Ball, Cornelius, NC, and Laura Renee Dickson, Cincinnati, OH. Other survivors include Carolyn Terango Clement, Louie Terango, Christine Terango, and Clara Terango. A native of West Virginia, he was the son of the late Sam and Laura Terango. He and his family lived in Richmond, Kentucky from 1978 to 1991 and in Lexington, Kentucky, since 1991. After thirty years, he retired as Professor, Department Chairman and Clinic Director at several Universities throughout the United States. Following his service in the army, during World War II, he received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Kent State University, Kent, OH and his Ph.D. from Case Western University, Cleveland, OH. Some of his activities include his participation in various community and professional organizations. These activities include: President, Painesville City Teachers’ Association, OH; as Clinic Director, Ohio State University, he developed a clinical accountability procedure that indicated the number and variety of individuals with communicative disorders that were enrolled and indications of clinical treatment provided along with results. He held the office of President, Wyoming Speech and Hearing Association and Vice-president, Wyoming Cleft Palate Association. He served on a variety of committees, American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and presented papers at several national conventions. In Tennessee, he was a Journal division editor, Chairman, research committee and the ethics committee. He participated on the planning committee for the Tennessee Governor's Conference for Deaf individuals; He obtained grant funds to initiate a pre-school Deaf Program at East Tennessee State University. He was President, East Tennessee State University Faculty Association. He participated in various local, state and national conferences and served on numerous evaluation teams for the National Council of Accreditation for Teacher Education. He published articles in local, state and national journals and televised several lectures dealing with communicative disorders and he published book reviews for the Cleft Palate Journal. He presented workshops for physicians, nurses and educators, and gave numerous lectures to civic and school-parent groups. He was certified to teach courses to certify industrial hearing conservationists. Some of his community activities: Board of Directors and Seal Sale Chairman, Lake County, Ohio. In Painesville, Ohio, served on Board of Directors, Lake Erie College-Community Theatre and Board of Directors, Junior Chamber of Commerce; Cochairman, Crusade for Children, Richmond, KY. Board of Directors and Chairman, Public Education, Richmond-Madison County Cancer Society; Chairman, Lexington, KY Oleika Shriners Public Relations and Speakers Bureau and Member of the National Shriners Public Relations Committee; President, Lexington, Kentucky AARP Chapter 345; Board of Directors, University of Kentucky, Donovan Scholars Program. He is listed in Who's Who in American Education; American Men of Science, Dictionary of International Biography, American Council of Learned Societies, Directory of American Scholars; Personalities in the South, Fellowship for Outstanding and Distinguished Service to the Profession of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, American Speech-language Pathology and Audiology Association; Who's Who in the South and Southwest; Kentucky Colonel for contributions to community, state and nation; Distinguished Leadership Award and Outstanding Service to Community from AARP; Honor Award for Honor, Duty and Fidelity, from Oleika Shriners. Services will be 10:00 AM Monday, May 19, 2003 at the W. R. Milward Mortuary – Southland conducted by Rev. Larry Day. The family will serve as pallbearers.
