I am researching the ancestry of William G. W. CATES(c.1815-1867) who married Sally
(Sallie) WILLIS on 1 Nov. 1855. I am reasonably certain that William G.W. CATES was
born in Madison Co., KY. He had a younger brother, Richard CATES who moved with him and
was listed in the 1850 Gentry Co., MO census as residing next to him. I suspect that
his father was Richard CATES (1765-C.1845) who died in Madison Co., KY. I can be

I am researching the Sims family, in particular, a Matthew/Mathew Sims who was born about
1745 in Virginia or North Carolina. He may have moved to either or both Johnson County and
Wake County, North Carolina and from there to Madison County Kentucky. He married, first a
Miss. Emory, who I have been told he paid passage for from England, and second Elizabeth
Harper Knight. He possibly fathered some or all the following children: Nancy, William,
Elizabeth, Lucinda, Josia, Randolph, Joel, Christiana, Edmund and Mathew. >From Madison
County, Kentucky records of him become really confused. Some say that the died there and
others say that he moved to Louisiana where he died. I do know that at least one child,
William moved to Audrain County, Missouri. It is from Mathew and his son William that my
wife is descended. I have researched the Sims line to William Sims and Elizabeth Hill in
England and now have quite an extensive history of the Sims family. Mathew has presented
himself somewhat of a problem. I cannot firmly tie him to a grandson of George Sims and
Dorothy Everard of Surry County, Virginia or to any other lineage.

I invite all correspondence regarding George LEE, who died in 1803 and whose estate was
settled in Madison County. His wife was probably Nancy PINKSTON. Their family included
Matilda, who married George WOOLERY in Madison County in 1810; Stephen; Nancy, Enoch,
Rachel, and George. Matilda WOOLERY settled in Cooper Co., Missouri. The others lived for
many years in and near Clark Co., Illinois. Daughter Nancy eventually married Abraham
WALTERS; Rachel was the wife of James KIDWELL, son of Drury KIDWELL and grandson of Rev.
Jonathan KIDWELL, both of whom lived for a time in Madison County. After husband George
Lee died in 1803, widow Nancy married William BURRIS in 1807 in Madison County. Their
daughter Mary also settled in Clark Co., Illinois and was the wife of Levi CLAPP. George
LEE was probably a son of Richard LEE of Buckingham Co., Va. Two sisters, Mary and
Elizabeth, married cousins Thomas LEE and Richard LEE, respectively, also of Madison
County. They were probably sons of Peter LEE from Washington Co., Virginia.

Searching for information on MOORE, BAILEY, WELLS, LYNCH and MILLION families in Madison
Co., KY: Lewis MOORE married Polly SMITH (think she had been married previusly to Joel
SMITH but I don't know her birth surname) in 1824. One of their sons, Lynch MOORE
(b. 1828) married Rebecca BAILEY (also b. 1828) in 1849. Rebecca's mother was Mary BAILEY
who appears in the 1840 census with 4 daughters but no males in the household -- they live
very near to several WELLS families and Rebecca is said to have had a grandmother WELLS
and an uncle Henry (not known if Henry was a WELLS but there is a Henry WELLS. In the 1850
census, newly-married Lynch and Rebecca are living in the household with Rodney MILLION
age 80 and Lucy (maybe a MOORE) age 46. Rodney was bondsman for their marriage license.
There are a number of MILLION-MOORE marriages in Madison Co. but I haven't figured out how
the families are connected. I believe there is also a connection somehow to Henry LYNCH
(maybe Polly was a LYNCH) who shows up in the 1820 census. By 1860 Lynch and Rebecca
MOORE were in Platte Co., MO, where there were also a number of MOOREs (perhaps brothers
of LYNCH)from Kentucky with children of ages that indicate they had relocated about the
same time. I do not find Lewis and Polly MOORE in Madison Co. in the 1850 census. Perhaps
one or both had died or remarried or moved elsewhere. Will be delighted to share
information with anyone researching these names.

Looking for James JOHNSTON or a Samuel KINDER who are listed on the 1830 U.S. Census for
Madison County, Kentucky. I have a James Kinder JOHNSTON (whose wife's name was Catherine)
in my line who had two daughters, Nancy Jane JOHNSTON and Katherine JOHNSTON. Nancy
married Leonard SCOTT on 18 Aug 1818 in Wayne County, Kentucky, and the marriage record
lists James Kinder JOHNSTON as her father and Peter KINDER as Surety. Katherine married
James Dunegan 23 Aug 1818 also in Wayne County, Kentucky, with Samuel KINDER listed as
Surety. (The JOHNSTONs and KINDERs seem to be related, considering James' middle name.)
After searching Wayne County and its surrounding counties for a while, I find a James
JOHNSTON and a Samuel KINDER listed in Madison Co., Kentucky, in 1830. I think these are
mine. Can anyone shed some light ?? Help !

I need any and all info on the BATES family in Madison Co. My ggrandfather, Stephen White
BATES was born in 1880 in Whitesburg, Ky. later relocating in Madison Co. and marrying
Virginia CARLISLE of Anderson Co. Stephen's parents were William H. BATES (possibly of
Clay Co.) and Margaret YATES of Madison Co. I am interested in some information that
possibly ties my BATES line to the BATES families of Letcher Co. I am trying to prove or
disprove the possibility that William BATES' father may be Thomas BATES (b.1809 d.1881)
who married Lucy Lee Thurman. Thomas BATES' would be son of John Wallis BATES (b.1779
d.1843) and his first wife Lavina Light (m.10-29-1803). I would appreciate any and all
information on this line of BATES' and any help in proving or disproving the link between
William, Thomas and John Wallis BATES. Thanks so much in advance.
