From: "Alice Enfield" Date: Friday, October 07, 2011 1:55 PM I researched Reason a bit and noted that while his stone is shown in the Pleasant Point Baptist Church, there is no other information there about him. I thought you might be interested in information from his Civil War File and his obituary. By my calculation he was born Apr 1833 (1900 census) in Lincoln Co. to Jesse Green Sweeney and Naomi Howard Sweeney and died 15 Aug 1905 (according to information in the obituary) and buried the 16th. He was married to Sarah Frances Griffin. Here are my notes: 1860 KY, Lincoln Co., None Stated, Image 150, family 1160: Reason Sweeny, 25, laborer; Sarah F., 22; David, 2. All born KY 1880 KY, Lincoln Co., Not Stated, Dist. 69, Image 36, family 356: Reason Swiney, 40, cooper; Sarah F., 30; George, son, 19, teamster; Martha J., dau, 18; Permelia C, dau, 14; Malvina, dau, 5. (these ages are off) 1900 KY, Pulaski Co., Glades, Dist. 111, Image 10, family 70: Reeves Sweeney, April 1833, 67, married 41 yrs., family all KY, farmer; Sarah F., May 1837 (it looks like) but age is 67, married 41 yrs. with 7 children 4 alive, born KY & parents VA. Most of Reason's military records are listed under the name of Rason Sweeny but at least once it was Reason Swiney. He is very difficult to follow. Ancestry.com World Tree Project: Ancestors and Cousins of Garril L. Kueber by Garril at gary_wc@kueber.us. This tree cites reasearch of World Wide Web, Yesteryear's Footsteps, Phyllis Shakelford Hedges at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=pshcth This tree cites his birth as abt. 1832 in Casey Co., KY & his death as 15 Aug 1905 in Waynesburg, Lincoln Co., KY. It does not say where the dates came from nor am I able to corroborate the death date at Ancestry.com but I did find this obituary item for him which does confirm the date of his death. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85052021/1905-08-18/ed-1/seq-3/ The Interior Journal (Stanford, KY) 1905-1910, August 18, 1905 SWEENEY.----Mr. Reason Sweeney, aged 73, died in the Kingsville section Tuesday of stomach trouble, He was a splendid old gentleman and had been sick some time. He was buried Wednesday. In the U.S. Union Soldiers Compiled Service Records, 1861-1865 at Ancestry.com Rason Sweeny is shown as 27, born abt. 1835. He enlisted 1862 in the 19th Inf., Ru-Th. Summary of information found at footnote.com or fold3.com: Reason Swiney mustered into service as a Pvt. Co. F, 19th Reg. KY Inf. on 26 Jan. 1862 at Camp Wood, Lincoln co., KY by Col. U. I. Laudeam. Extra duty worked on road from 26 Jan 1862 to 5 Feb 1862. He enrolled 15 Oct 1861 at Camp Harrod for three years. Rason Swiney, Pvt. Co. F, 19 Reg. KY Inf. is reported as missing in Jan & Feb of 1863 because he was sent to the hospital at Jefferson Barracks 14 Jan 1863. He deserted from the hospital at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO 5 June 1863 and returned to his regiment 4 Sep 1863 with loss of pay and allowances from 4 June until the 4th of Sept. 1863 by order of the Brig. Com. Feb. 12, 1886 the charges of desertion of June 4 & 5 were removed and he is shown as absent without proper authority from 5 June 1863 til 4 September 1863. On April 8, 1864, he was reported missing in the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads, La. This was later changed to him being captured. He was a prisoner of war fron 8 Apr 1864 until 23 Oct 1864 and was mustered out at Louisville, KY 25 Jan 1865. He last was paid $53.00 on 31 Oct 1863 and was due $100. A memorandum from prisoner of war records show that Reason Swiney, Pvt., 19th Reg., KY, Co. F Union Army was captured at Mansfield on 8 Apr 1864 and was paroled at Red Riv. Ldg. La on 23 Oct 1864 and reported at New Orleans on 27 Oct 1864. The last record shows that Reason Swiney, Co. F, 19th KY Vol was also borne as Rason Sweeney. I don't understand the last notations for it says 2nd aud case to D.C. Aug 26/86, also case 11291 8th to P? Dec 1985. & Pen case July 5, 83. This must be something that pertains to his file. Alice Oh, by the way you also have Sarah Sweeney, 1864-1932, with a picture of her headstone in this same cemetery. I believe you will find this is Sarah Aggie Sims Gooch Sweeney. She has a death certificate #1819 in the KY death records. It shows: Lincoln Co., KY, Cert. #1819: Sarah Aggie Sweeney, female, white, widowed of Howard Sweeney, b. 24 Jul 1858 in Kings Mtn., KY to Jack Green Sims & Ervie Gooch both of Kings Mtn., KY died 14 Jan 1932 at Kings Mtn. The birth date is either wrong on her death certificate or on her headstone but all other information seems to be correct. She married first Squire Davison Gooch and had 4 children by him and then married Howard Sweeney and had 3 daughters and a son by him. Howard Sweeney is buried in this same cemetery. This 1920 census shows her as a widow with the combined children: 1920 KY, Lincoln Co., Waynesburg, Dist 83, Image 23, family 242: Mrs. Aggie Sweeney, 60, Wd., farmer; Laura Gooch, dau, 43; Bertha Gooch, dau, 35, dress maker private family; Mae Sweeney, dau., 19; Ada Sweeney, dau, 16; Roy Sweeney, son, 7; Maree Sweeney, dau, 3 6/12.
