CRACE, LEWIS, WHITT

October 22, 1998 (Updated 10/27/98) Rhonda Fulkerson
Tab I am looking for a Jerry LEWIS who married Plyna CRACE and they had the following children: Mentie, Nervie, Martha, Eskel, and Della F. Della F. LEWIS was born Dec. 24, 1887. I have no dates on anyone else. Della married Malcom WHITT and lived in Magoffin County, KY. I cannot find Jerry LEWIS in Magoffin County. I found a Jerry LEWIS in the 1880 Letcher County Census listed as being 18 years old, which could be about right. Jerry was living with a 73 year-old James LEWIS who was born in Virginia and his 54 year-old wife, Perlina, who was born in Kentucky. It says Jerry LEWIS is his son. Although, I thought maybe it might be grandson with such an age difference. Does anyone know anything about these Lewis's? I would appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks so much.
Tab Update: I found a marriage record in Johnson County, KY, for my Jerry LEWIS who is actually Jeremiah M. LEWIS married to Perlina CRACE on March 16, 1885. I still think he is the Jerry LEWIS from the Letcher County, KY, census.

ANDERSON, BENTLEY, TUCKER

January 2, 1999 Joyce Wallace
Tab I am in need of information on James Martin BENTLEY's family who are shown in the 1880 Letcher County census. There, he is listed with wife Tabitha, and the entire family down to a 5 year old child is listed as having been born in NC., so apparently they hadn't been in Letcher County very long at that time. He is listed in the marriage records as marrying Sarah E. TUCKER in Letcher County on 11/8/1887. It appears that the first wife, my ancestor, has died. My mother remembers the name Tucker, but didn't know how it tied into the family until now. James Martin BENTLEY and Tabitha had a daughter Martha Caroline who married Benjamin ANDERSON in Letcher County on 7/6/1887, just 4 months before her father remarried. Benjamin and Martha's daughter Tabitha Viola was born on 6/30/1898, and it appears that she was an only child. Martha Caroline (BENTLEY) ANDERSON died about 1903. I need, in particular to know Tabitha BENTLEY's maiden name. Also, does anyone know the burial place of any of these people? I've searched all of the listings in this website unsuccessfully.

DIALS/DILES, SPARKMAN, THACKER

January 9, 1999 Dorsey Jude, Jr.
Tab After researching the THACKER and DILES/DIALS surnames, I have determined there was a close connection between these families. I have yet to determine the exact nature of this relationship. Perhaps the answers to the following questions will help resolve this dilemma:

1. Why is Robert THACKER's wife, Elizabeth DILES, age 29 on the 1870 Letcher County census, using the DILES name even though her maiden name was identified as SPARKMAN according to her marriage record?
2. Why is Robert THACKER's possible sister, Elizabeth DILES, age 42 on the 1870 Letcher County census, using the DILES name even though she was previously identified on the 1850 & 1860 census' using the name THACKER? She appears to be the sister of Robert THACKER and thus, a sister-in-law to Elizabeth SPARKMAN. Consequently, Robert apparently had a wife & a sister who both used the name Elizabeth DIALS/DILES at one time or another.
3. Why is Sarah DIALS, age 50 on the 1880 Letcher County census, using the DIALS name even though she was previously identified on the 1850 & 1870 census' using the name THACKER?
4. Why is Melissa DIALS, age 30 on the 1880 Letcher County census, using the DIALS name even though she was previously identified on the 1850, 1860 & 1870 census' using the name THACKER?
5. Why is Andrew DIALS, age 23 on the 1880 Letcher County census, using the DIALS name even though he was previously identified on the 1860 & 1870 census' using the name THACKER?

I'm sorry I've no accurate dates to work with - early 1800's up(?). I know that my grandmother, Rebecca HALL NOE (married Elbert NOE) was born 2-6-1896, and she was the daughter of Alex and Arlena. There were at least 13 children by this couple. This Hall family migrated to Clay Co., KY. If anyone has any information, please forward on to me.

COOPER, DAY, WATKINS

Tab I am looking for the parents of John Wesley COOPER. He is said to have been born August 1849 in Letcher County, Ky. This information comes off his marriage certificate. He is not found in the 1850 Census of Letcher County (no Coopers are mentioned). In the 1860 Census of Letcher County, he is listed as being 11 years old living in the home of a John DAY and family. I am seeking any connections to the Day family and the Coopers, or any info about any Coopers in that area at that time. Thank you.
Tab Update: My Great Grandfather John Wesley COOPER was listed in the 1860 census of Letcher County living with a Day family. On his marriage certificate to Mary Jane WATKINS on December 24, 1868, in Floyd County, KY, he lists his place of birth as Letcher County, in 1849. On his death certificate in 1913 in Greenup County, KY, it states his mother's maiden name was Adams. Family "Lore" states he was a full blooded Cherokee Indian who was adopted by the Cooper family. Have found no truth to this. I am looking for anyone in the Letcher County area who has a Cooper/Adams connection. Thank you.
