William W. “Bill” Zoellers, 77, of Pikeville, Kentucky, died at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital.


He was born at London, Kentucky, January 18, 1925, a son of the late Clement Anthony and Sarah Elizabeth Zoellers.


He was a retired electrical engineer and employed by the American Electric Power Company for 41 years.


He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Florence “Poppy” Zoellers.


He is survived by three sons, Lt. Col. (Retired) W. David Zoellers of Pikeville, Kentucky, Charles Hagan Zoellers of London, Kentucky, and Joseph Edward Zoellers of Melbourne, Australia; two daughters-in-law; and four grandchildren.


He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II from 1943 to 1946. After the war he completed high school, graduating from Hazard High School in 1947, and then the University of Kentucky with a degree in electrical engineering in 1951.


Zoellers started his career in Pikeville in 1951 as an engineer trainee in the tech meter department. Over the years he served as a distribution engineer, power sales engineer, and district supervising engineer. He retired in 1990 having served for 12 years as the Pikeville Division Manager.


Active in civic affairs in Pikeville, he is a past president of the Kiwanis Club, and was involved with the Little League baseball program in the area for 35 years, serving nine years as the organization’s president. He was also a past chairman and served on the Board of Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church, and is a past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.


Visitation will be on Friday, November 22, at the J.W. Call and Son Funeral Home in Pikeville between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.


Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 23, at the First Presbyterian Church of Pikeville, with Pastor Scott Wiest officiating.


Burial will follow in the A.R. Dyche Memorial Park in London, Kentucky. Arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Call and Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
