DIED John Griffin Carlisle On Wednesday evening, January 6, at half-past 8 o'clock, of dropsy of brain, at the residence of his grandfather, W. Sayers, Kenton County, Ky., John Griffin, infant son of R. M. Carlisle of Covington, Ky., aged 8 months and 17 days. Oh why didst thou leave us dear one? Our hearts in their grief fain would ask. And in soft music notes comes the answer "Weep not, I am happier than ye, Gone to be with my mother in heaven." (The Cincinnati Daily Enquirer, Monday, January 11, 1864, pg. 2) Note: John's mother was Elizabeth Sayers Carlisle born 1841, the daughter and eldest child of William Sayers and Jemima Theobald. Elizabeth died of childbirth complications hence the reference to his "mother in heaven." His father, Robert M. Carlisle, was an attorney and the brother of John Griffin Carlisle who was Lt. Governor of KY, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Secretary of the Treasury under Grover Cleveland. Robert born in 1836 and died of Consumption in 1867. This tragic little family is buried in the Sayers plot in Highland Cemetery.
